Wimberley Lady Texans look to have a breakout year

After qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-2017 season last year, the Wimberley Lady Texans Basketball team will look to make a breakthrough this season to potentially win their first playoff game since 2016.

Following their playoff run which saw the Lady Texans fall to Salado, who fell to Fredericksburg in the Regional final, Wimberley now looks to build off their playoff berth to a potential playoff win along with a roster filled with four seniors and seven juniors.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball Magazine predicts the Lady Texans to finish third in their district behind Fredericksburg and Boerne.

But a return trip to the playoffs will be another tough road for Lady Texans with Fredericksburg and Boerne ranked in the Top Ten by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches with the Billies sitting at 3rd and the Greyhounds sitting at 5th.

Gunning for the third playoff spot along with Wimberley is the trio of Bandera Lady Bulldogs, the Canyon Lake Lady Hawks, and newcomers Comal Davenport who are playing their first basketball season in UIL competition.

Both the Lady Hawks and the Lady Bulldogs gave the Lady Texans some scares during last season’s district play so the battle for the final two playoff spots will once again be a heated race.

The 2020-2021 season kicked off for Wimberley with a season opening loss to Navarro, who are currently ranked 23rd in the latest TABC poll, dropping the contest 59-38.

But the Texans rebound ed and proceeded to go on a five game winning streak including beating a few 5A schools in Seguin, San Antonio Southwest, and Austin Navarro.

The winning streak was snapped at the hands of the Hays Rebels in a 79-36 loss.

The loss triggered a five game losing streak for the Lady Texans before Wimberley bounced back with a 53-45 win over St. Stephens.

The last game before the Christmas Holiday layoff, Wimberley battled the Lago Vista Lady Vikings in non-district competition.

Wimberley and Lago Vista battled hard in the first quarter with the Lady Texans taking a 14-13 lead over the Lady Vikings.

Wimberley proceeded to outscore Lago Vista in the second quarter 18-9 as the Lady Texans took a 32-22 lead into halftime.

However the Lady Vi kings stormed back in the third quarter as Lago retook the lead heading into the final quarter up 40-31.

Though the Lady Texans fought valiantly, the third quarter hole was too much to overcome as Wimberley fell to Lago Vista 56-54.

Senior Carson Crowder led the team in scoring with 15 points while sophomore Emily Thames finished the game with a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds which led the team.

Wimberley resumes play on Dec 29 Tuesday morning against Bruceville Eddy before finishing the final week of non-district with a Wednesday morning game against San Marcos Home School and a Saturday early afternoon game on the road against Comfort.
