Wimberley High baseball to host Texan Classic

Wimberley Texan Baseball started maneuvering their way through scrimmages, a “Battle of the 12” game versus Dripping Springs in support of the WillPower Community Foundation and a couple of tournaments in preparation for their district season that began March 7 against Davenport High School.

Head Coach Stephen Wisdom has seven seniors on roster with only two returning starters to a team packed with pitching depth and growing positional talent.

“We have pitchers — probably the deepest bunch since I’ve been here — and players that can keep opponents in check but we’ve got to swing the bat,” shared Wisdom. “District is going to be a dogfight. To battle for a title, we’ve got to score runs when the opportunity presents itself. We’ve got to get baserunners on and around, putting together multiple run innings.”

District for the Texans includes Bandera, Boerne, Canyon Lake, Davenport and Fredericksburg High Schools. The 2023 campaign will be different than in previous years as each team faces their district opponents three times during district play rather than twice as in the past.

“Because of the changes, we’re getting an early start with district,” commented Wisdom. “We play Davenport Tuesday (March 7) then host our tournament in its regular spot on the second weekend in March. We play Bandera away on Tuesday, March 14 and the Fredericksburg game moved up to Thursday (March 16) at home — so we’ll play eight games over 10 days, including three in district.”

The team has had a few surprises with players coming in to fight for position. Wisdom feels the competition is good and that the effort will serve to keep the Texans in contention through the season.

The Texan Classic tournament begins Thursday, March 9 at Texan Field featuring the 4A state-ranked (4) Godley Wildcats, 6A’s Cibilo Steele Knights and perennial 4A power Stephenville Yellowjackets. The Texans enter the season ranked 19 in Texas UIL 4A division.

Coach Wisdom and the Texans extend a warm invitation to the community to join them at the ballpark — located at 290 Ballpark Road across RR 2325 from the Wimberley Springs entrance to Woodcreek North — to enjoy the weather, load up on hot dogs and concessions, and cheer for the home team.
