Wimberley battles tough in shorten Texan Classic

Weather had decided to declare war on the Texan Classic in both softball and baseball this year.

After bad weather shortened the Texan Classic for softball, the Texan Classic for baseball was also shortened due to the cold weather spell to take Wimberley by storm as the Texans planned four games were shortened to just three.

But it was a rough outing for the hosts as Wimberley went 1-2 in the Texan Classic with a win over St. Michaels and two losses to Lutheran Academy and Stephenville.

For Head Coach Stephen Wisdom, the Texans have shown signs of progress through the season and the tournament.

“Our consistency at the plate has been good,” Wisdom said. “We are not scoring runs yet we are not striking out either because we are putting the ball in play. Those hits will start to become hits as the season goes. You feel bad because you lose the game and do not score enough runs but you come back and see most of the team is not striking out. It’s good and something you can go off of. Our defense has been really consistent until this weekend.”

In their first game for the Texans, Wimberley battled St. Michaels to kick off the Texan Classic.

Both teams were held scoreless through the

1st and 5th innings with neither team seeming to gain an edge over the other.

St. Michaels struck first as a RBI double brought home two runs for the Crusaders.

St. Michaels followed up with the RBI double with another RBI double as two more runs came home for the Crusaders as they took a 4-0 lead.

The Crusaders added one more run to their lead before hitting into a double play to end the inning with St. Michaels up 5-0.

The lead didn’t last long as the Texans stormed back.

Senior Ruger Riojas got Wimberley on the board as a RBI triple scored Hagen Donley to cut the lead down to 5-1.

Riojas then scored as Josh Prado hit an RBI single to then cut the lead down to 5-2.

Now with runners on the corners, Dylan Kin caid then hit another Texan RBI triple to score two runs as Wimberley was down 5-4.

An error by the St. Michaels catcher allowed one more run to score for Wimberley before another error by the St. Michaels third baseman allowed the Texans to go up 6-5.

St. Michaels was able to tie the game up on a sac fly in the sixth inning as the Texans headed into the final inning with the score at 6-6.

Following a Riojas walk, Prado hit the game winning run with an RBI double to score Riojas as the Texans got the walkoff win at 7-6.

Lutheran South Academy was the next opponent for Wimberley as the Pioneers squared off with the Texans for the doubleheader.

Despite having the game tied up at 1-1 through three innings, the Pioneers scored five runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 13-1 win over the Texans.

Wimberley wrapped up the tournament on Saturday as their game with Stephenville was moved from Friday night to Saturday morning.

It was a back and forth battle between the two teams as both the Texans and the Jackets tied and retook the lead.

In the end, Stephenville scored four runs in the fifth inning and shut out Wimberley in the bottom of the fifth as the Texans lost 11-7 to close out their run in the tournament.

Wimberley returns to play during Spring Break for a double header on Thursday as the Texans travel to San Antonio to battle Cornerstone Academy with Game 1 at 12:00 and Game 2 at 2:00.
