Volleyball takes Area Championship

The Wimberley Texan Volleyball team brought home two gold trophies this week after defeating Burnet and La Grange in the Bi-District and Area rounds of the playoffs.

The Texans will square off with the Caldwell Hornets in the Regional quarterfinal round at Pfulgerville Weiss.

Traveling to Johnson City last Tuesday, Wimberley battled the Burnet Bulldogs in the Bi-District round of the playoffs. Both teams were familiar with each other having played each other in the regular season with Wimberley winning 3-0.

After dominating the first two sets, the Bulldogs played competitive in the third but ultimately fell to Wimberley as the Texans won 25-16, 25-14, 25-20.

“We handled Burnet pretty quick,” Head Coach Stephanie Barthels said. “I felt like we got a little complacent being that we played them earlier in the season, and we didn’t struggle. I don’t know that the girls had the same fight we normally do, but we took care of business in a handed manner. It was a quick and painless night.”

Wimberley then traveled to Luling on Friday to battle with the La Grange Leopards for the Area Championship. After winning the first two sets, the Leopards came back and won the third set. Despite losing the set, the Texans stormed back and dominated the fourth to win 25-21, 25-12, 22-25, 25-13.

“LaGrange played better than I thought they would,” Barthel said. “They played every point like it was their last. They had one really good hitter and fortunately we have seven. When someone wasn’t hitting as well as someone else, we were going to the hot hand. Rayna Pack stood out. It was 10 to 7 in Game 4, and she hammered a shot down the line and that scared them. They never recovered. She had a huge night for us. Annie Detmer served really well. It kept them on their toes, and they couldn’t get the passes they wanted. Payton Knight and Brina Jones were blocking great. We took care of business. It was fun to watch.”

On Tuesday, after the Wimberley View’s time of press, the Texans played Caldwell High School for the Regional Quarter Finals. If the Texans win, they will play in the Regional Semi Finals on Friday at 1 p.m. and the Regional Championship follows on Saturday at 11 a.m.
