Between sets, Wimberley volleyball coach Stephanie Barthels gives strategy to her Texan team. Last Friday, the Texans defeated Boerne in four sets to up this season’s record to 24-11.

Volleyball storm back against Boerne

After falling in the first set, Wimberley gets a victory in combeback fashion

Boerne’s volleyball girls stormed into the Wimberley gym last Friday with the intent to taking down the Texans. Through the first set, it looked as if they might succeed as they pulled off a 25-17 win just as the Texans were settling into their style.

But, luckily, volleyball is a game that requires a team to win three sets to defeat an opponent. In the second set, Wimberley settled into their own style, limited their mistakes and returned to what had worked all year. Led by the hustle of Jordan McFarland and Maddie Maxwell, they slid into their groove and won the second set 25-22 to tie at a set apiece.

The Texans continued their steady play in the third set and won again by 25-22 which set up the crucial fourth maybe last game. But, in what would prove to be the deciding game, Boerne seemed to gain back some of their strength. The Chargers matched the Texans point for point until the score stood at 28 to 27. At that point, Wimberley’s senior libero Maddie Maxwell closed the door on Boerne’s hopes with a serve that hit the net then fell over for an ace and the Texan win. Wimberley 29, Boerne 27! Game over, let’s go home!

The next game for the Wimberley varsity takes place this Friday, October 12 at home against Canyon Lake with a 6:00 start.
