Volleyball beats No. 1 ranked Needville

The Wimberley Texan Volleyball team had a tremendous task before them Thursday night, which was knock the No. 1 and undefeated Needville Lady Jays in order to qualify for the State Tournament.

But undeterred by their opponents, the Texans ended up pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the 4A playoffs stunning the Lady Jays 3-1 (25-22, 25-13, 18-25, 25-23).

With their victory, Wimberley will advance to the State Tournament for the first time since the 2010 season.

To begin the regional final, Needville jumped out in front of Wimberley early in the 1st set to take an 8-2.

But the Texans fought back and eventually took the lead back at 13-12.

Following a series of highly contested games, it was Wimberley who came out on top winning 25-22.

It was the first time Needville dropped a set in the playoffs with their last set loss coming on October 27.

The second set was another heated battle as the two teams were deadlocked at 10-10.

From there Wimberley controlled the rest of the set by going on a 15-3 run to take the second set at 25-13 and taking a commanding 2-0 lead.

Despite a valiant effort by the Texans, Needville avoided the sweep by winning the third set 25-18 and forced a fourth set.

The fourth set was filled with intensity and tension with neither team taking more than a three-point advantage.

Despite trailing 18-17, the Texans went on a 4-1 run to take a 21-19 advantage forcing Needville to the breaking point.

The lead soon shrunk to 23-22 as the Lady Jays desperately fought back.

But the Texans came through in the clutch moment as Wimberley won the hotly contested battle-winning 25-23 and taking the Region IV title at 3-1.

Paige Crawford led the team in both aces and kills with four and 24 apiece while Briana Jones held the net with six blocks. Not to be outdone, Ryhan Masur put on an amazing performance with an eye-popping 51 digs.

Wimberley is set to battle Bellville in the State-Semifinals in Cuero Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Texans will look to exact revenge on the Brahmas after losing an early regular-season game 3-1.
