UIL suspends spring sports

The University Interscholastic League suspended all UIL competitions starting March 16 through the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

“To support the health and safety of our students and communities, the University

Interscholastic League is suspending all UIL sanctioned contests” in an UIL official statement.

The canceling of spring sports was one of many things in March of 2020 that was unexpected.

“It’s kind of shocking I guess,” Wimberley ISD Athletic Director Doug Warren said. “But we want the safety of all kids to be at the forefront...so we will go with it and we will make the best of it.”

For many of the Wimberley students, especially the seniors, it was a disappointing announcement but Warren says he knows the kids will bounce back from adversity.

“I think the (kids) will be a little disappointed,” Warren said. “These kids love to compete and play these games but that will be the initial reaction... but the kids will bounce back and when we get back to practicing and playing we will be right back amongst it.”

The news of the UIL suspending their spring season came on the heels of the NCAA suspending their winter/spring seasons due to the coronavirus and after the NBA,MLS, NHL and MLB also temporarily suspended play as well.
