Turnovers doom the Texans in district loss

Despite leading the Navarro Panthers 14-0, the Wimberley Texans were unable to hold on as the Panthers scored 42 unanswered points on route to a 42-14 win.

In an uncharacteristic performance, Texans had four turnovers which lead to three Panther touchdowns.

“We had way too penalties and too many turnovers,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “When you do that you are not going to win.”

After receiving the kickoff, the Texans drove down the field on the Panthers and into their territory. Facing 4th and 8 on the Navarro 22-yard line, Cooper McCollum found Christian Marshall not only for the first down but for the score as well as the Texans struck first at 7-0.

After trading possessions, Navarro looked to tie the game up. Facing fourth down, the Panthers went for it but messed up the pitch forcing Navarro to recover the ball and give the ball back to Wimberley.

The Texan offense took advantage of the good field position as drove the ball inside of the 10- yard line. Facing 4th and goal, McCollum found Kolby Goforth for the touchdown to extend the lead at 14-0.

The Panthers responded to the Texan touchdown driving all the way the field and converting on a couple of fourth and down situations before Navarro running back Moise Sims scored from 11 yards out to cut the lead at 14-7.

The Texans offense responded to the Panther touchdown by driving down into Navarro territory.

After converting on fourth down, the Texans threw an interception which was returned all the to the Navarro 40 yard line. On the next play, Panther running back Sims scored on a 40-yard run to tie the game up at 14-14 and ended the first half.

Receiving the ball for the second half, the Panthers fumbled to give the ball back to Texans. Taking advantage, the Wimberley offense drove down the field and into the RedZone. However, a controversial fumble as running back Moses Wray appeared down gave the ball back to Navarro.

The Wimberley defense held firm after the turnover as the Texans stopped the Panthers on 4th down to get the ball back.

It was the last of the good luck the Wimberley Texans as the following play the Navarro picked off the ball for their second interception and returned it for the touchdown to take the lead at 21-14 and swing the momentum towards their sideline.

After the Texans were forced to punt, the Panthers scored again as running back Johnny Algeria scored from 42 yards out to extend the lead at 28-14 and end the third quarter.

The Panthers scored two more times in the fourth quarter as Algeria scored from 11 yards out and running back Euler De Leon scored from 1 yard out to take the win at 42-14.

Despite being tied at halftime, the Texan offense had an entire identity shift with Cole Schroder taking over as quarterback due to Cooper McCollum leaving the game with an injury.

“It (the offense) changes a ton because he (McCollum) has a different skill set,” Warren said. “Cole can do some things in there too he’s a good runner…they confused him with some different coverages but that’s okay because that’s a good learning experience for him, we’ll bounce back and get better.”
