Track and field sends 18 event entries to regionals

Wimberley High School track and field qualifiers competed at the District 27-4A/284A area meet on April 19 at New Braunfels Canyon HS.

After the competition, both the girls’ and boys’ teams finished in second place. The top-four finishers in each event qualify to compete at the 4A-Region IV track championships, to be hosted at Texas A&M University in Kingsville on April 28–29. In all, WHS will have 18 event entries at the regional competition.

Leading the way for the girls’ team at the district meet was senior Emily Thames, who qualified for regionals in all five of her events, including all three relays, long jump and triple jump. A twotime state qualifier in the long jump, Thames won the long jump and was part of two school record- setting relay teams (4x100 and 4x200). The 4x100 team of Thames, sophomore Lauren Foster, junior Baylee Gold and sophomore Laney Hennessee finished in fourth place with a time of 49.22 seconds, besting the 2021 school record of 49.79 from the quartet of Lillie Bolton, Grace Harney, Rhyan Masur and Thames. The 4x200 relay team also set a school record, finishing second at the meet. The team of Foster, Hennessee, Thames, and sophomore Addison Laney finished in 1:43.49 to beat out the 2016 record of 1:44.06 accomplished by Serena Frank, Mikayla Sanders, Haley Schake and Zorina Weed.

Gold will be competing in three events at regionals: the sprint relay, the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump. She won the triple jump at area with a personal best leap of 37’ 8”. Hennessee also qualified for regionals in the long jump as well, finishing fourth.

The defending 4A state champion boys’ team was led by Gabriel Wray, who repeated his district meet feat of resetting both of his school records in the two horizontal jumps events: long jump and triple jump. His area winning marks were 23’ 7.5” in the long jump (adding four inches to his school record) and 48’ 1.75” in the triple jump (eight inches further than his previous record). Senior Nathan Brooks, junior Lane Towns and sophomore Nolan Waida all ran on the advancing 4x200 and 4x400 relays. In addition, Waida advanced in the long jump.
