Tough game readies soccer for district play

The Wimberley Texan soccer team travelled to Taylor on February 5 and lost 5-1 to one of the best teams they had seen all year. “This was probably the best team we had seen up to this point,” Texan Coach Ramez Antoun explained. “Taylor applied steady pressure on both halves of the field. They forced us into predicable situations then capitalized on our errors.”

Wimberley’s only goal came late in the fourth quarter after the game had pretty well been decided. “They have a strong group of players who stick together on clubs and area teams. Their senior player named Jose’ Cano may be the best player we’ll see this year. Of course we didn’t play our best game while they are a very, very strong team.”

Then the Texans got a breather last Friday without a game when the match against IDEA Montopolis was cancelled due to bad weather. The cancellation also provided a needed chance to heal some bumps and injuries. Slowly the Texan squad begins to get some of the “wounded” back into action just in time for district competition to begin.

According to the coach, some “wounded” players such as centerback Brian McGuire and defender Ahron Arroyo will stiffen the defense again while Brendan Shott will return in goal again. Defender Ramsey Frank has suffered shin and foot issues but he also may be ready soon. “Getting the skills of these experienced players back on the field just as district competition begins is great for us,” Texan Coach Antoun admits.

After opening district play at home on February 12 against Fredericksburg, the Texans will travel to Boerne this Friday for a 7:00 district game.
