Top 20 finishes at Cross County State

The Wimberley Cross Country team had two runners place in the top 20 at the UIL 4A State Championship last weekend.

Ashlyn Royal placed 15th overall in the Girls’ State Championship with a time of 12 minutes, two second in the two-mile race.

“She started off strong and stayed up with the leaders for the majority of the race and then ran down a couple of girls down the stretch,” Head Coach Lacey Lambert said.

There were 152 runners in the competition.

Griffin Neal finished 20th in the Boys’ State Championship with a time of 16 minutes, three seconds in the five-kilometer race out of 151 competitors.

“He has had an issue with his ankle all season, and he tweaked it right before the race started,” Lambert said. “He said it was difficult to get through the race, but he still ran a great time. He was hoping to finish in the top 10, but top 20 is still great.”

Both of the State Championship competitors are seniors and this was their second time running at State.

“The two of them dedicated themselves to running over the last four years,” Lambert said. “They showed everybody else that you really have to go above and beyond to be as successful as they have been over the years. They showed a love for running, which isn’t very common these days. For them to have that excitement for running and to show that to our other athletes, they will be really missed. That leadership and excitement will be missed.”
