Thrilling one point victory for Texans

Holding the Fredericksburg Billies to just 20 points, the Wimberley Texans were able to hang on against their Hill Country rivals in a thrilling 21-20 victory.

Texans hand the Battlin Billies their first loss of the season while improving their own record to 3-1.

After giving up 57 points last week to a high-powered Lampasas team, the Texan defense bounced back to slow down Fredericksburg’s offense which had averaged 52 points per game.

“We gave them (Fredericksburg) some different looks they hadn’t seen and just being physical,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “I thought defensively we were more physical tonight than we had been in a long time. With the exception of a few plays, we really kept them in check all night long.”

The Billies started the game off well on the opening kickoff where Fredericksburg returned the ball all the way down to the Wimberley 15 yard line. After a couple of plays, Billies quarterback Cole Immel snuck in on the two-yard touchdown to give the Billies an early 6-0 lead following the miss extra point.

After trading possessions back and forth, the Code Red defense got their first major stop of the game holding Fredericksburg on 4th down.

The Wimberley offense struck back after the turnover on downs as senior Quarterback Matthew Tippie found senior wide receiver Jaxon Watts on a 72-yard pass and catch to set up shop on the one-yard line.

Two plays later, Tippie snuck in on the quarterback sneak for the score and take the lead at 7-6 following a Jack Bruner extra-point kick.

The defensive battle between Wimberley and Fredricksburg raged on with neither team gaining the edge on the other.

After both defenses held firm during the first half, the Texan offense finally found a breakthrough late in the 2nd quarter.

The late drive ended when Tippie found Watts again, this time on a 26- yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 14-6 before halftime.

Receiving the ball to start the second half, the Wimberley offense struck again as junior running back Juan Olmedo scored on a 16-yard run to take a 21-6 lead.

After an interception by Nathan Simpson, the Texans threatened to score again following a 25 yard run by Olmedo. But the Texans couldn’t convert the turnover into points as Wimberley missed the field goal.

The Billies took advantage of the missed field goal and turned the following drive into points as Immel scored again on a 26-yard run to cut the led down to 21-12 after not converting on the two point conversion.

The following drive saw the Texans drive all the down into goal territory but a series of plenties and an interception stopped the drive dead in its tracks.

The Billies drove down the field inside the Texan 20 yard line before the Wimberley defense stuffed Fredericksburg on 3rd down. The field goal attempt was blocked by the Texans to keep the game at 21-12.

After the Texans punted on the following drive, the Billies scored following a 45-yard touchdown pass from Immel to Tripp Dennis and converted the two point conversion.

Following the onside kick recover by Wimberley, the Texans sealed the game as Olmedo’s first-down run put the game out of reach for the 21-20 win.

Despite missing Moses Wray and Christian Marshall, who left the game due to injury, the offense stepped up as Olmedo, and Watts had their biggest games of the year. Olmedo led the team in rushing with 124 yards, and Watts led the team in receiving with 197 yards.

The Texans are back on the road as Wimberley travels to Somerset to battle the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have struggled of late going 0-2 with losses to Sealy (6- 34) and Beeville Jones (13- 34).
