Three second-half turnovers lead to Texan victory

The Wimberley Texans forced three interceptions in the second half including Juan Olmedo’s 58-yard interception return for a touchdown to seal a 45-13 victory over the Alice Coyotes Thursday night in Jourdanton.

The Texans improved their record to 5-1 overall.

Though the Wimberley Texans won in blowout fashion, penalties plagued the team all night long including a couple of flags that led to an Alice score near halftime.

“Too many penalties, that is not us,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game.

“Too many personal fouls and all of that. We won’t be as good as we can be unless we can clean that up. It’s a direct reflection of me and those other coaches and that is not Wimberley football. We’ve got to change that, or we will never be as good as we can be.”

After receiving the kickoff, the Texan’s opening drive saw the offense drive down into Alice territory. But the offense couldn’t convert on fourth down and turned the ball over.

Two plays later, Alice running back RJ Salaiz took the snap and ran 75 yards for the score to give Alice their first lead of the game at 7-0.

The following kickoff, the Texans made another offensive drive into Alice territory but couldn’t convert on third down leading to a 29-yard field goal by Jack Bruner to cut the lead at 7-3.

Alice hoped to respond to the Texans field goal, but a sack by John Boyle on third down ended the drive and the Coyotes were forced to punt.

Early in the second quarter, the Texans offense got their first touchdown and the subsequent lead as quarterback Matthew Tippie found wide receiver Ty Pruett for the 16-yard touchdown to make the game 10-7.

The two teams struggled to score following the Texan touchdown as both the Coyotes and the Texans were plagued by penalties that wiped away both touchdowns and critical third downs.

The Texans were finally able to overcome the flag filled game with a touchdown drive late in the second quarter as Moses Wray dove in for the two-yard touchdown run to extend the lead at 17-6.

The Alice Coyotes were able to strike again, with the help of a couple of costly Wimberley penalties, before halftime as Alice quarterback Jacob Guzman found Salaiz for the 42 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead down to 17-12 following the Wimberley Defense stopping Alice on the two-point conversion.

The ensuing kickoff saw the Texans return it for a touchdown, but a holding call wiped out the seven points off the board before the teams headed into the locker room before halftime.

After receiving the kickoff to start the second half, Alice looked to strike back, but Juan Olmedo’s interception stopped the drive dead in its tracks.

This led to another Texan score as Tippie found Jaxon Watts for the 25-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 24-13.

Following another series of penalties by both teams, the Alice drive was stopped once again as Nathan Simpson intercepted the pass to stop the Coyotes.

The Texans looked to score again but a series of flags forced the Texans into a 3rd and 30 situation that was too much to overcome forcing Wimberley to punt.

The Code Red defense came up with another stop as the Texans forced another third-down sack leading to an Alice punt.

Wimberley struck once again as Tippie found Simpson on a screen pass for a 52-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 31-13.

The Alice offense tried to come back in the game but a back-breaking interception by Olmedo led to a 58-yard pick-six to extend the lead 38-13 and halt Alice’s momentum.

The Texans scored a final time in the fourth quarter to seal the ugly game as senior Cole Schroder found Colby Cotten on the 46- yard touchdown pass to make the final score 45-13.

Wimberley starts district play this Friday on the road at Manor to battle the Manor New Tech Titans.

The Titans kicked off district play with an 81-0 loss to the Geronimo Navarro Panthers.
