Texans win close scrimmage against La Vernia

After two weeks of hitting and tackling each other, the Wimberley Texan football team was finally going to play someone who wasn’t wearing the navy blue and red.

The Texans traveled to La Vernia to scrimmage the Bears as the two historical rivals looked to prepare for the season despite the ongoing pandemic.

After the freshmen and the JV teams took their snaps earlier in the day, it was time for both varsity squads to take the field.

Both teams took a series of 15-20 plays while allowing both the first team and second-team squads to gain valuable playing experience before the start of the live quarter.

While normal scrimmages allow a live quarter to be played, both Wimberley and La Vernia battled each other in a live half to make up the loss of the scrimmages that were canceled during the second week of August.

La Vernia took the ball first to start off the Live Half but were eventually stuffed by the Texan defense, which forced the Bears to punt.

After a shanked punt put the ball on the La Vernia 30 yard line, it wasn’t long before Burnet transfer quarterback Matthew Tippie found Tyler Pruitt for the score to take an 7-0 lead for the Texans.

The Texans defense proved to be formidable again and forced the Bears to punt after stopping La Vervia on 3rd and ten.

The Wimberley offense rolled down the field and got the ball inside the La Vernia 10 yard line. However, the Texans were plagued with a couple of dropped passes and were unable to score on fourth and goal to end quarter one.

The Bears capitalize on the Texans’ misfortune and were able to hit a big pass play to get inside Wimberley territory. One play later, La Vernia scored on a 40- yard touchdown pass but were unable to kick the extra point successfully leaving the game at 7-6 in Wimberley’s advantage.

After moving the ball well on the Bears defense, the Texan offense failed to get inside the La Vernia 50 and was forced to punt.

La Vernia hoped to take the lead in the waning minutes of the quarter but a Jaxon Watts interception stopped the Bears in their tracks.

The Wimberley offense found their groove again and moved the ball against the Bear defense including converting on a 4th and nine play to extend the drive.

But the drive ended in disaster as the Texans fumbled, and gave the ball back to the La Vernia offense with the hopes of stealing the scrimmage win away from Wimberley.

On the last play of the game, La Vernia attempted a last-second Hail Mary to win the scrimmage but was ultimately thwarted as the Texan defense sacked the quarterback to seal the win.

With the scrimmage out of the way, the Texans look towards the season opener as they look to battle arch-rival Canyon Lake.

This will be the 13th meeting in the Battle of the Backbone with Wimberley leading the series 9-3. Last year’s matchup saw the Texans stun the Canyon Lake homecoming crowd en route to a dominating 45-7 win.

Though the electric atmosphere will be missed this year due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions, this brewing rivalry will not be short of the intensity.
