Texans swat the Yellowjackets

In the final home game of the year against the Llano Yellowjackets, the Wimberley Texans scored 34 unanswered points despite trailing 21-14 in route to a 48-27 victory.

The win secures the Texans a playoff berth and improves their overall record to 7-2 and the Texans district record to 3-1.

Trailing 21-14 in the second quarter, the Texans stormed back to score 34 points.

“It says a lot about those kids,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “This team and the firepower and the way they can do those things… I’m proud of the way they fought back. “

The Texans started hot in the first quarter and on the second play of the game Juan Olmedo ran for a 73-yard touchdown run to give the Texans the early lead at 7-0.

After trading a couple of possessions, the Texans intercepted the Llano Jackets as Olmedo picked off the Yellowjacket quarterback Brandon Vickers.

The turnover turned into seven points for Wimberley as Cooper McCollum found Moses Wray on the running back screen pass for a 25-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead at 14-0.

After the touchdown, Llano drove deep into Wimberley territory. However, the Texan defense held firm and forced a fourth-down conversion for the Yellowjackets. Llano attempted a 30-yard field goal to score their first points of the game but the kick bounced off of the field goal post.

The Texans were forced to punt on the following drive but soon had the ball back after a Yellowjacket fumble which was recovered by John Boyle.

Wimberley was unable to take advantaged of the fumble as the Texans threw an interception to give the ball back to Llano.

The Yellowjackets took advantage of the turnover with a touchdown of their own as Vickers found Yellowjacket receiver Case Kuykendall for the 15-yard touchdown to cut the lead 14-8 after the two-point conversion.

After another Texan punt, the Yellowjackets scored again this on a 60-yard pass from Vickers to Quincy Prince to tie the game at 14-14 after the missed extra point.

The Wimberley offense again failed to get moving the ball and was forced to punt again.

Despite having the ball at their 7-yard line, Llano strikes again as Vickers found Prince again for a 93-yard touchdown pass to take their first lead of the game at 21-14.

The Texan offense finally started moving the ball on the Yellowjacket defense followed by big gains by Olmedo and Kolby Goforth. But a Wimberley fumble ended the drive and gave the ball back to the Yellowjackets.

After giving up two big plays on consecutive drives, the Texan defense bunkered down and held the Llano Offense down and forced them punt.

It was a big stop for the Texans defense, has it allowed the offense to get back into the game. After a big completion from McCollum to Christian Marshall, McCollum found Josh Limely for the 16-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 21-21.

The Texan defense can up with another big stop shortly before halftime as Olmedo came up with his second interception of the night.

In return, the Texan offense scored again as McCollum found Marshall again, this time on a 42-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead at 28-21 and into halftime.

Receiving the ball at halftime, Llano looked to tie the game. However, the Texan defense came up with a couple of big sacks including a couple from Jadon Potts to force the Yellowjackets to punt.

Wimberley took advantage of the defensive stop and drove down to the Llano 2 yard line before McCollum hit Colby Boyle on the 3-yard jump pass to extend the lead at 34-21 after the missed extra point.

The Texan defense came up with another interception on the next Llano drive this time by Jaxon Watts.

The Texans scored again following the interception as Moses Wray rumbled for the 11-yard touchdown run to put the lead at 41-21.

Following another stop by the Wimberley defense, the Texans scored again as McCollum dove for the 1-yard touchdown to extend the lead at 48-21.

Though the Jackets scored late in the fourth quarter, the Texans had already slammed closed on the Llano victory as Wimberley closed the game with the game 48-28.

The Texan defense came up big forcing 4 turnovers including three interceptions.

“We knew they were going to try and throw the ball against,” Warren said. “The kids responded and made those timely interceptions and we had to and gain the momentum back.”
