Texans start district play

The Wimberley Texans basketball team kicked off district last week splitting their two district games with a 65-47 loss to the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies and a 68-26 win over the Davenport Wolves.

The Texans even out their record at 9-9 overall and are currently tied for second place in the district at 1-1 along with Bandera, Davenport and Fredericksburg.

In their first game of the week, the Texans found themselves down in the first quarter as the Fredericksburg offense was hot while Wimberley was cold. At the end of the first quarter, the Billies were up 19-4.

The Texans’ offense got into a groove during the second quarter and were able to bounce back after the slow start scoring 15 points. But the Billies kept the offensive momentum going into the second quarter scoring another 19 points as Fredericksburg took a 38-19 lead into halftime.

The second half saw both the Texans and the Billies score 27 points during the third and the fourth quarter but the first quarter hole was too much to overcome. Fredericksburg took the 65-47 win.

Leading the team in scoring was Jaxon Watts with 16 points followed by Zane Sutton-Edwards with 10 points.

After the loss to the Battlin’ Billies, the Texans returned home to take on the Davenport Wolves Friday night.

The first quarter was eerily similar to the Fredericksburg game. The Texans struggled to score during the period as Wimberley scored just five points. But the Texan defense cracked down on the Wolves’ offense and allowed just three points.

The second quarter once again was another outburst for the Wimberley offense as the Texans scored a whopping 26 points against the Wolves while again holding Davenport to just eight points.

Heading into halftime, the Texans were up 31-11 on Davenport.

The Wimberley offensive machine continued to roll in the second half as the Texans outscored the Wolves 37-15 during the two quarters as Wimberley marched to a 68-26 win.

This week’s slate appears to be another tough challenge for the Texans as Wimberley goes on the road to Boerne to battle the Greyhounds who sit atop the district standings after a thrilling 78-71 triple overtime win over Fredericksburg. Wimberley will then return home Friday night to take on rival Canyon Lake in the Battle of the Backbone.
