Texans sink the Pirates, advance to Quarterfinals

Wimberley’s ‘Code Red’ defense forced three turnovers in the second half helping the Texan offense score 14 additional points. The effort was good enough for Wimberley to overwhelm the high powered Sinton Pirates to win 35-14.

The Texans will advance to the Quarterfinals game.

After the Texans went three and out on their first offensive drive of the game, Sinton struck the first blow as the Pirates scored on a 55 yard touchdown run to take an early 7-0 lead.

But the Texans offense responded to score as Wimberley tied the game after Chris Schatte scored from 14 yards out.

With the Code Red defense forcing a three and out to the Sinton offense, the Texans struck again as Schatte scored his second touchdown to take a 14-7 lead.

The Sinton offense tried to respond to the touchdown, but the Code Red defense came up with big stop on fourth down to end the drive.

Following a Wimberley punt, Sinton fought back with a long touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14.

But the Wimberley offense didn’t crumble under the pressure as quarterback Matthew Tippie hit Nathan Simpson for the 40 yard touchdown to retake the lead at 21-14.

The Pirates tried to score right before the half to tie the game and give Sinton momentum going into the second half, but the Code Red defense came up with another stop as Canyun Stanton picked off the pass to end the scoring threat and kept Wimberley’s lead heading into halftime.

After trading punts to start the second half, Sinton again tried to break through the tough Texan defense to tie the game up.

But the Code Red defense came up with another big stop as Kerrick Lai intercepted the pass and gave the ball back to the Texans.

The Texans responded to the turnover with a touchdown as Tippie found Jaxon Watts on the 29 yard pass on 4th down to extend the lead at 28-14.

Again Sinton tried to respond to the touchdown in order to keep up with the red hot Wimberley offense but the Texans came up with their third turnover of the game as John Boyle recovered the fumble to give the ball back to Wimberley.

Wimberley then scored again as Tippie found Ty

Pruett on the 39 yard touchdown pass to put a dagger into Sinton’s comeback and seal the victory at 35-14.

The combination of a now resurgent Wimberley offense and a tenacious Texan defense that held the Pirates, who were averaging 35 points per game, to just 14 points helped put Wimberley into the Quarterfinals where they will face rival Navarro.

This will be the second consecutive meeting between the two district rivals in a the playoffs with Wimberley winning last year’s Regional Final game against the Panthers 42-12. The rivalry between the two teams is a heated one since the series started in 2010 with Navarro leading the all time series at 7-6. But Wimberley leads where it matters going most with the playoff series record at 2-0.

The Texans and the Panthers will meet at Boerne ISD Stadium in Boerne Friday night at 7:30.
