Texans roundup the Buffaloes

Texans roundup the Buffaloes

Following their season-opening win over the Burnet Bulldogs, the Wimberley Texans were back at home squaring off with the Giddings Buffaloes. After last season’s 63-13 loss to the Buffaloes, the Texans hoped to prove that loss was just a fluke.

In an exciting game that featured four lead changes in the final five minutes, the Wimberley Texans were able to mount a 74-yard touchdown drive with a 1:07 left in the game before forcing the game-winning fumble in route to a 29-22 victory.

“Overall, just the way they fought and hung in there and kept battling,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “That’s is what you like about a team…they just kept fighting and found a way to get it done.”

With the victory, the Texans improve their record to 2-0 while Giddings falls to 0-2.

Giddings scored on the opening drive on a one-yard touchdown run by Brian Zoch to open up the score at 7-0. Before the touchdown, the Buffaloes caught a lucky break when quarterback Alex DeLaTorre fumbled the ball during a long run yet Giddings recovered the football.

The Texan defense tightened up and wouldn’t allow another touchdown for the rest of the first half. On the other side of the ball, the Wimberley offense struggled as the Texans failed to convert on any scoring opportunities. The team was shut out through the first half.

Giddings made one final push as the Buffaloes were in field goal range at the end of the second quarter. Though the Texans blocked the kick, a flag was thrown for “leaping,” and the Buffaloes were granted a second chance. The field goal was good to end the half 10-0.

The offense would finally find a spark in the second half as the Texans drove down the field on their first drive. Cooper McCollum found Christian Marshall for a 12-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead 10-7.

After the defense held the Buffalo offense, the Texans responded again and drove down the field for another score. Moses Wray ran in for the one-yard touchdown to take the Texans’ first lead of the game at 14-10.

With less than five minutes left in the game, Giddings fought back. A Delatorre touchdown run brought the score to 16-14 after a failed extra point. In response, Wray ran 66 yards for the score to retake the lead at 21-16. The Buffaloes responded as DeLa-Torre hit CJ Anderson for a 63-yard touchdown pass with 2:20 left in the game but failed the extra point

Down 22-21 at the Texan 36-yard line, the Wimberley offense marched down the field before the McCollum found Josh Limely for the game-changing touchdown with just 1:04 left in the game. McCollum also hit Colby Boyle for the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 29-22.

As the Buffaloes tried to respond, the Texan defense forced and recovered a fumble that ultimately sealed the game at 29-22.

McCollum went 18-31 with 300 yards passing, 2 TDs, and 3 interceptions. Moses Fray lead the team in rushing with eight carries for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns.
