Texans play in Navarro Tournament

The Wimberley Texan boys’ basketball team played in the recent Navarro tournament and came away with three wins and two losses. The last game of the tournament against Lockhart proved to be a classic of Texas high school basketball with 5A Lockhart holding off a last minute shot by the Texans to win 41-39. “Playing against Lockhart was a really tough game with lower scoring and trading baskets back and forth,” Texan coach Mike Whitten said. “We’d been averaging almost 60 points a game. For this game, the final score with Lockhart coming out on top. That low scoring was mostly at tribute to both teams playing good defense.”

“It was also very physical and tough game. There was 1.9 seconds left on the clock in the fourth period when Josh Limeley went up with the shot. He got knocked around a little bit but the ball didn’t drop in. If that shot right at the end drops, we play on. This was one of those back and forth games where it could have gone on all night. But, that’s part of the game. It was a good tournament and we get stronger by playing against 5A teams such as Lockhart.”

Along the way to this final game, the Texans lost to Marion 74-38, beat New Braunfels Christian 73-36, Halletsville 58-33 and Navarro 55-44. Wimberley post player Landon Kirchner was named to the all-tournament team. Even with the loss against Lockhart, the Texans have rolled up a respectable record of 11-4.

By University Interscholastic Rules, the teams can’t practice or play for at least five days over the holidays, so the break gives players and coaches’ chances to be with families and to celebrate the holidays. So, the Wimberley boys will take a short holiday break before coming back to practice then take part in the Hays Invitational tournament set for December 27, 28 and 29.

“This should be a very, very challenging tournament for us,” coach Whitten said. “These will be 5A and 6A teams so it’s good for us to play some tougher competition. They’re going to be bigger than us, stronger than us, more athletic than us. We’ve got six sophomores playing significant minutes on the varsity who need to learn how to play against this level of competition. I think it’s good for us to face these big schools. It can help us get ready for district play.”

Then, after early January games against Burnet, Liberty Hill and Marion, all tough opponents, district play begins with an away game against Fredericksburg, one of the favorites to take the district title. Wimberley’s first home district game doesn’t occur until January 15 against Bandera.
