Texans haul in a Bi-District win

The Wimberley Texans football team captured their first playoff victory in two years as they defeated the Poteet Aggies 49-35 in a shootout victory.

The win advances the Texans to the Area Round of the playoffs where they will play the Raymondville Bearkats in Mathis this Friday at 7:30.

After last season’s playoff loss to Crystal City in the Bi-District round, the Texans were out to prove to everyone that last year’s loss was a fluke.

“We are not accustomed to being bounced in the first round,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “We weren’t happy where we were last season with four wins, and it wasn’t up to our standards.”

Receiving the ball to start the game, the Texans drove the ball deep inside Poteet territory and inside the 10 yard line, which was capped off by a Moses Wray big run. Facing 4th and goal, Wray punched it in two yards out to give the Texans the early lead at 7-0.

Forcing the Aggie offense to go three and out, the Texans offense again drove the ball deep into Aggie Territory. Facing another 4th down situation, Cooper McCollum found Christian Marshall for the 15-yard touchdown to extend the lead at 14-0 and end the first quarter.

The Aggies finally got on the scoreboard following an Eric Trevino five yard touchdown and attempted the onside kick that ultimately failed.

The kick haunted the Aggies as Wimberley took advantage of the good field position. Following a big pass play from McCollum to Marshall, the Texan offense was setup inside the Aggie 10 yard line. Despite facing 3rd and goal from their 30 yard line, McCollum found Marshall again to put the ball back on the two yard line before McCollum snuck in on 4th goal for the twoyard score to extend the lead at 21-7.

After the defense stopped the Aggies from scoring again, the Texans scored again as Moses Wray ran for the three yard touchdown to make the score 28-7.

Following an 88-yard kickoff return, the Aggies cut the lead to 28-14 following a Trevino one-yard touchdown run.

The Texans responded to the Aggie touchdown with a touchdown of their own driving all the way down the field before McCollum found Josh Limely for the four yard touchdown pass to put the game at 35-14 with 47 seconds left in the game.

However the Aggies scored again shortly before half as Trevino found Josh Hill for the 35 yard touchdown to cut the lead at 35-21.

Wimberley tried to score before halftime but was ultimately stopped short ending the first half score at 35-21.

Receiving the ball to start the second half, the Aggies went a 14-play drive that took more than six minutes off the clock before Poteet running back Ernest Davila scored from three yards out to cut the lead at 35-28.

The Aggie were able to finally stop the Texans offense and forced Wimberley to punt. After receiving the ball, Trevino scored again for his third rushing touchdown of the game on a 38-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 35-35.

With all the momentum on Poteet’s side, the Texans needed a response. Driving all the way down field, the Texans punched it in with Wray’s one-yard touchdown run to retake the lead at 42-35.

Aggies looked to tie the game up again, but were faced with a 4th down. Following a Poteet timeout, the Texans stuffed the Aggies at the line of scrimmage to give the ball back to the offense.

Following the fourth down stop, the Texans scored again as they drove down the field on the Aggie defense before McCollum dove in on the nine-yard touchdown run to extend the lead 49-35.

Poteet looked to score to keep themselves in the game but were ultimately stopped short on another 4th down situation. With another fourth down stop, the Texans kneeled out the clock for the victory.

Though the defense gave up 35 points in the game, it came up big in the end with two fourth down stops in the fourth quarter to halt the Aggies from scoring.

“We are just so beat up on that side of the ball,” Warren said. “We knew they (Poteet) could pose a problem…when we needed big stops, 4th downs late in the game, and they (defense) came up with those.”

The offense had one of their best games of the season so far with 466 yards of offense and scoring on seven of their ten offensive possessions.
