Texans fall in district opener

The Wimberley Texans faced a tough opponent in their district opener as the undefeated and 16th ranked Fredericksburg Billies came to town.

It was a rough outing for the Texans as Wimberley fell to Fredericksburg 50- 30. The loss drops the Texans record to 9-11 overall and 0-1 in district.

The Billies jumped on the Texans in the first quarter. Scoring 11 points including two three pointers, Fredericksburg’s offense was red hot and shut down the Texan offense allowing just three points in the first as Houston Murphy’s lone three point kept Wimberley from being shutout.

The Texan offense continued to struggle during the second quarter as Wimberley only managed eight points during the period, seven of which came from Murphy. While the offense struggled against the Billie defense, Fredericksburg continued their barrage of the Texan defense hitting 12 points during the period. At the end of the second quarter, Wimberley was down 23-11.

But Wimberley didn’t give in to Fredericksburg. The Texans controlled the Billie’s offense and stopped the bleeding holding Fredericksburg to just nine points during the third quarter. As the Texan defense held the Billie offense in check, the offense woke up in the third to out score Fredericksburg 10-9 in the third quarter and cut the lead down to 32-21.

By the start of the fourth quarter, the Billie offense woke up. Scoring 17 points during the fourth, Fredericksburg pummeled the Texan defense with a barrage of free throws and three pointers. As the Billie offense heated up, the Texan offense couldn’t keep up. Scoring just nine points in the final period, the Texan offense cooled off during the final period on the way towards the loss.

Houston Murphy led the team in scoring with 14 points and finished the game with a double-double along with 14 rebounds. Jaxon Watts finished second in scoring with seven points and six rebounds.

Wimberley returns home on Tuesday to battle Bandera before traveling to Boerne on Friday to take on the Greyhounds.
