Texans eliminated in third round of playoffs

San Antonio - For the first time all season, the Wimberley Texans baseball team couldn’t quite get the timely hit they needed when they needed it.

As a result, for the second consecutive year, their road to a state baseball title was derailed in the third round of the UIL baseball Region IV playoffs.

The Texans’ 6-2 loss in a one-game, winner-takeall matchup to a very good Fredericksburg squad effectively ended the careers of an outstanding graduating class of seniors who helped bring Wimberley baseball back to the forefront.

After finding their way into the state’s Top 20 earlier in the season, Wimberley posted one of the best seasons in school history behind senior ace Cole Spillar and JoJo Weeks - who is headed to UTSA on a football scholarship - for much of the campaign.

First baseman Matt Mitchell, right fielder Kaden Kowalski, starting pitcher Connor Gips, utility player Caleb Cervenka and catcher Matt Burgin have all contributed to a successful run at Wimberley.

“There’s nothing you can tell these guys that will make them feel better in a time like this.” Texans head coach Dane Saucier said. “All you can do is focus on what these seniors have accomplished while they were here and everything they have done for this program.”

The game began positively enough as the Texans (23-4-1) cashed in on an early Fredericksburg miscue to take a short-lived 1-0 lead with Gus Abel singling in JoJo Weeks from second base.

But the Battlin Billies would come storming back on back-to-back RBI doubles by Dax Dietrich and Riggs Threadgill to take a 2-1 lead at the bottom of the first inning.

Wimberley knotted the score at 2-2 at the bottom of the third when Braden Wallace lofted a sacrifice fly to shallow right field to plate Dalen Masur, who singled to open the frame.

But unfortunately, the Texans squandered several chances after the third inning, that proved to be their undoing against a couple of solid pitchers who were at the top of their game.

Threadgill was efficient on the hill for the Battlin Billies - who will face Beeville Jones in the regional semi-finals - as he pitched the final two and two-thirds inning in relief of starter Ryan Segner while allowing only two runs and striking out three Wimberley batters.

While Segner threw the opening four innings and surrendered four hits, two runs and struck out six Texans.

Cole Spillar took the loss for Wimberley. lasting four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on ten hits, striking out three and issuing only one walk.

Fredericksburg kept the pressure on Spillar with a 12-hit attack that saw Hobbs Price, Don Flannery, Threadgill, and TJ Tomlinson all rack up multiple hits in their win.

Price also went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Battlin’ Billies at the plate. Weeks finished 2-for-2 at the plate to pace Wimberley.
