Texans come back strong from holiday break

Returning back from the holiday break, the Wimberley Texans Basketball team looked to get back on the hardwood and into the win column with a three-game slate.

In the first game of the week, the Texans battle the Eagle Pass Eagles Tuesday afternoon. Though Eagle Pass is classified as a 6A team, the battle between the Eagles and the Texans was close.

The first quarter was an intense battle between the two squads with neither team giving an edge to the other. At the end of the first quarter, the Texans led the Eagles at 20-16.

The second quarter was another tough battle as the Eagles battled back to retake the lead, but the Texans held the Eagles at a reasonable length into halftime. At the end of the 2nd quarter, the Texans led 41-34.

But the Eagle Pass fought back in the third quarter as the Eagles outscored the Texans 18-11 during the period. Heading into the fourth quarter, the game was tied up at 52-52.

The intense fever pitch had reached its boiling point during the fourth as both teams looked to take the win. In the end, the Texans outscored the Eagles 24-19 in the final period to knock off Eagle Pass 76-71.

Three Texans reached double digits in scoring as Zane Sutton-Edwards, Ethan Scheleder and Jaxon Watts scored 15, 14, and 10 points for the team. On the boards, Devin Latz led the team in rebounds with eight.

Wimberley returned the next night to battle the Boerne Geneva Eagles in the second game of the week.

The first quarter was another tight battle for the Texans that saw the Eagles take an 11-10 lead heading into the second quarter. The Texans came back in the second quarter as Wimberley took the lead heading into halftime at 24-19.

The battle between the two teams raged on as neither refused to give in. After the third-quarter buzzer, the Texans still led at 38- 33.

The Eagles tried to pull off the comeback but it wasn’t enough as Wimberley came away with a close 53-52 win.

Scheleder led the team in scoring with 15 points along with Cade Royal with 12 points. Royal also led the team in rebounds with eight while Latz and Ty Cabler combined for eight rebounds as well.

The final game of the week saw the Wimberley Texans take on the Blanco Panthers.

It was a tough battle for the Texans as Wimberley fell to the Panthers in a 68-55 loss to snap their two game winning streak.

This week is the final week of non-district play as Wimberley will battle Navarro Monday night then Central Catholic Friday Night.
