Wimberley quarterback Colby Boyle scrambles to avoid a Navarro lineman during last Friday’s game.

Texans can’t keep up with Navarro

After last Friday’s 56-28 loss to Navarro, the Wimberley Texans football team will play on the road this week against a tough Llano team also seeking a good district seed for the playoffs.

“Llano has one district loss just like we do,” according to Wimberley football coach Doug Warren, “and they have already qualified for the district playoffs, as we have.”

“They’re a good football team and this is another traditional rival, so it’s a big game for us. The four teams already in the playoffs now include Wimberley, Cuero, Llano and Bandera. Teams are seeded in our district one through four and district 14 will do the same with one meeting four and two meeting three in a cross-over. Being in that fourth spot makes it tough to advance.”

That seeding process will all play out in the next few weeks. So, to gain a good seed, the Texans have their backs to the wall against two of their toughest rivals. After Llano this week, Wimberley will close the regular season at home against Cuero, an always-tough rival, in their final district game. Some seeding help for Wimberley may come this Friday as Cuero plays Navarro with the result weighing heavy on the losing team.

“Offensively, Llano runs out of shotgun formation with a pretty good quarterback,” Coach Warren said. “He’s a good passer who also can beat you with his running. Defensively they run to the ball well and they tackle well. Last night we had one fumble and two interceptions. We can’t turn the ball over like that against Llanno and expect to win.”

According to the coach, young Colby Boyle played well at quarterback and didn’t get flustered.

“He handled himself well and I was pleased with the way he played. We have to remember that he’s a junior who didn’t get much playing time last year and hardly any this year until we lost Cooper McCollum for the rest of the year.”

The Texans were still in the game against Navarro after the first quarter, but Navarro’s big, powerful defensive line pretty much controlled the line of scrimmage. “We were down only a touchdown, still in the game and we needed just to capitalize on our momentum to cut their lead to seven. But two long touchdown runs by their two quick backs put the game out of our reach.”
