Texans blow out Panthers to start district play

The Wimberley Texans started district play on the right foot last Thursday as the Texans blew out the Austin Eastside Memorial Panthers 51-0.

The Texans improve their record to 5-1 while the Panthers drop to 0-6.

Though the game was figuratively over at halftime, many of the backups gained valuable experience.

“It’s incredibly valuable,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said after the game. “Number one they (backups) are an important part of this team. They do a great job for us… Plus you never know when they are going to be called on. They are one play away from being the guy.”

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Texans scored on their first drive of the game as Cooper Mc-Collum found Josh Limely on a 13-yard pass to go up 7-0.

Forcing a three-and-out on defense, Wimberley scored again as McCollum showed off his inner Johnny Manziel as he scrambled 22 yards for the score at 14-0.

The Panthers were forced to punt on the following drive and the Texans were able to put together another touchdown drive as Juan Oldmedo ran 19 yards for the score to go up 21-0.

Another Eastside Memorial three-and-out forced by the defense allowed Wimberley to score again as McCollum found Christian Marshall on a 22-yard pass to extend the lead at 28-0.

With another three-andout forced by the Texan defense, the second-string offense faced the task of finishing the game off despite only being in the second quarter.

Not deterred, the offense scored again as Manny Esquina scored on the threeyard run to go up 35-0.

On the ensuring drive, the Panthers were forced to punt but an errant snap over the head forced Eastside to recover the ball in their own endzone to give the Texans a two-point safety.

Despite fumbling the ball and giving it back to the Panther offense, Wimberley forced a fumble of their own, which was recovered by Brandon Martin, to get the ball back and kneel out the 1st half with the score 37-0.

The Texans scored two more times during the second half with Nova Rankin running 20 yards for the score and Blake Mullinix hitting a 23-yard run for the touchdown to make the final score 51-0.

Cooper McCollum led the team in passing going 6-9 for 101 yards and two touchdown passes. Christian Marshall was the leading receiver with three catches for 65 yards and a score followed by Kennedy Strange with two catches for 25 yards.

Leading the team in rushing yards was Cole Schroder with four carries for 61 yards followed by Blake Mullinix with eight carries for 56 yards and a touchdown. Overall the Texans finished the game with 272 yards of rushing.
