Texans beat Llano, prepare for Cuero

The powerful Cuero football team, with a record of eight wins and a single loss, will attempt to derail the Texans season when they come to Wimberley this Friday for the last game of the regular season. The Texans, with a record of four wins and five losses, hope to even their 2018 record by beating the always-tough Gobblers before both teams move into the district playoff faze of the 2018 season.

“Cuero may be the toughest team we will play this year,” Wimberley coach Doug Warren warns. “They’re good on the ground and their good in the air. Anytime you play at home, because of the home crowd, it’s an advantage. Plus, this is our senior night so we plan to go in hyped. We were lucky in the Llano game because we suffered no major injuries.”

Last Friday night, the Texans played away against Llano and needed a last minute goalline stand to win 31-24. After see-sawing back and forth, the teams entered the overtime deadlocked at 24. Choosing first possession in the overtime, Wimberley moved steadily into position to score, then Texan halfback Guy Kypuros ran off tackle for three yards and the go-ahead touchdown. With the extra point, Wimberley lead at 31-24.

As the referee placed the ball on the 25 yard line again, Llano still held their last chance to tie the game or to win. Down by down, yard by yard, Llano slowly pushed toward the goal line until on fourth down the ball rested less than one yard from the Wimberley goal line. At that point, Llano’s quarterback attempted a sneak but a mass of Texan linemen rose up to stop his charge one yard short of the goal. Game over! Wimberley wins 31-24! Bring on the Cuero Gobblers!

Coach Warren gave out special praise to his linemen Zach Starr and Ben Jacobson. “Ben pressured their quarterback all night and Zack was tough up and down the line. I also think this was Colby Boyle’s best game at quarterback so far this season. He had some good reads, some good passes and three touchdown throws. That catch and run pass to Caleb Cervenka for 80 yards was a beauty!”
