Texans’ strong finish to non-district play

The Wimberley Texan basketball team closed out the week with a 61-42 win over the Geronmino Navarro Panthers to close out non-district play Tuesday night with their game Friday night against the Central Catholic Buttons canceled.

With their victory over the Panthers, the Texans improve their record to 8-8 overall and have won five out of their last eight games.

The first quarter was a tough battle between the Texans and the Panthers that saw Wimberley take a 10-9 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Texan offense stepped up their game in the second quarter outscoring the Panthers 19-10 during the period as Wimberley took a 29-19 lead into halftime.

The offense for Wimberley continued their attack well into the third quarter while the defense held their ground against Navarro. Going into the final period, Wimberley led 44-28.

Though the Panthers made a late offensive charge in the fourth quarter, the Texan’s offense refused to slow down as Wimberley came through for the 61-42 win.

Sophomore Miles Scheleder led the offensive attack in scoring with 20 points which included six made three-pointers. Ethan Scheleder and Cade Royal scored 10 points to add to the scoring effort.

With their game against Central Catholic canceled, the Wimberley Texans will now focus on district play.

Though the Texans will be gunning for Fredericksburg and Boerne for the district crown, Head Basketball Coach Mike Whitten says the team will take the trio of Bandera, Canyon Lake, and Davenport just as seriously.

“We are going to take Davenport, Bandera, and Canyon Lake just as seriously as we do Fredericksburg and Boerne,” Whitten said. “We prepare the same way and don’t watch the film and say ‘Ah we just got to play these guys’. We prepare for these guys just like we prepare for everyone else… If you do want to make it to the playoffs, you can’t take these guys lightly, slip up, and lose a game. That is going to haunt you down the line.”

But despite the fact both Fredericksburg and Boerne are ranked in the latest TABC Top Ten, Whitten says last year’s games against the Billies and the Greyhounds has given the team hope they can compete for a district championship.

“We have been competitive against (Fredericksburg) and Boerne,” Whitten said. “Last year we were up on Boerne by ten at home but ended up losing by six. The guys I think had a light go off like ‘Man we can compete with these guys. Even though they are ranked in the Top Ten in the state they are not machines and they are beatable you’ve just got to compete and do things right.”

Wimberley will travel to Fredericksburg Tuesday night before coming back home Friday night to battle the Davenport Wolves.
