Texan Volleyball clinches a share of the district crown

The Wimberley Texans Volleyball clinched a share of the district crown last Friday night in their 3-1 win over the Bandera Bulldogs.

This will be the third straight district championship for the Texans as the team clinched the district championship in the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The first set started off in a close battle as the Bulldogs kept it close with the Texans as Wimberley hung to an 11-9 lead.

But the Texans rolled to an 11-4 run to take a 22-13 advantage to eventually win the first set at 25-13 and taking a 1-0 lead.

The second set was another close battle both Bandera and Wimberley failed to give the other breathing room. Before the Wimberley timeout, the Texans were holding on a 16-15 lead.

But a 7-2 run by Bandera gave the Bulldogs the advantage as Bandera was soon up 22-18.

A valiant charge by the Texans made the game 23-22 in the Bulldogs favor, but Bandera was able to close out the set at 25-23 and tie the match up at 1-1.

The third set turned into an intense battle as the lead flipped flopped between Wimberley and Bandera. After a Bandera timeout, the game was tied at 20-20.

But in the end, the Texans 5-2 run following the timeout was the difference maker as Wimberley won the third set 25-22 to take a 2-1 advantage.

The momentum from the third set win had completely swung towards Wimberley’s way in the fourth set.

The Texans jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before Bandera regrouped and close the gap to 13-12.

Wimberley put on the pressure again by going on a 7-3 run to make the score 20-15 before closing out the set with a 25-21 victory to win the match 3-1.

Paige Crawford led the team in kills with 19 while Analyse Detmer led the team in aces with three. The duo of Layla Dubuisson and Cameren Davis held the net with two blocks each.

But the Bandera game wasn’t the only game of the week for Wimberley as the Texans battled the Davenport Wolves Tuesday night.

It was a dominant performance by the Texans who swept through the Wolves for a 3-0 win.

Holly Harwood led the team in kills with 11 and also led the team in aces with Briana Jones with two apiece. Jones and Harwood along with Crawford and Dubuisson all lead the team in blocks with two.

The Texans finish up the regular season this week against two of their fiercest rivals with Canyon Lake at home on Tuesday night and on the road against Fredericksburg Friday night with one win clinching the district title outright.
