Tennis

Wimberley’s talented tennis team defeated Bandera 19-0 by sweeping all singles and doubles matches on September 27.

“I was proud of our kids for staying respectful to Bandera while still taking care of business on the court,” coach Ashley Huse said after the match. “It’s very easy for athletes to get caught playing down to the level of their opponents,” she continued. “So, I can honestly say that my team played up at their level in tennis and as people in that Bandera match.”

“We still have work to do,” the first-year year coach added. “We’re making strides every day in practice so we can be at the level we need when we play our final district match against Beorne on Oct. 11th. That match will determine if we come out 2nd or 3rd in district.”

Kyle Armstrong and Evan Mayhew, partners on Wimberley’s boys’ second doubles team, haven’t lost a single match this season. Assistant tennis coach Ramez Antoun says, “As a doubles team, Kyle and Evan always have smiles but play hard in every match. They enjoying being on the court and that’s what tennis is all about.”

With the girls’ team, Maddie Elliot also gets high praise from head coach Huse for her undefeated record as a singles player. “Maddie hates to lose and she is so competitive! She battles for every point in every game, in every set!”

Unfortunately last Saturday, just as games were about to begin, the games against Marshall and Kerrville Tivy were cancelled due to rain.

Volleyball

After a week that included two crucial district wins, the Wimberley Texans’ volleyball girls played at Bandera on Tuesday and will host Boerne this Friday. All of these matches count in district standings.

The Texans defeated Fredericksburg in three sets 25-17, 27-25, and 25-22 last Tuesday night and upped their record to 21-11 with three wins in district play.

Offensively, Senior Reilly Horn lead the team in kills with 10 while sophomore setter Jordan McFarland lead the team with 19 assists and three aces. Defensively,

Maddie Maxwell provided 16 digs while Rayna Pack added four blocks.

Then, on Friday night, the Lady Texans overpowered the Canyon Lake Hawks 25-16, 25-16, 25-10 in three easy sets which brought their record to 22-11 including three district wins. Against Canyon Lake, coach Stephanie Barthels could give her reserves more game time after the Texan starters repeatedly forced Canyon Lake into erratic play.

Against the Hawks, Rayna Pack lead the Texans with nine kills and Jordan McFarland added four aces. Maddie Maxwell tallied 21 digs while Payton Knight, Paige Crawford and Olivia Linton each provided three blocks.

Cross Country

Rain canceled last weekend’s cross country races in Round Rock so top racers Ashlyn Royal and Griffin Neal could not compete. Coach Brad Biggers had sent both to the McNeil Invitational at Old Settlers Park because they rank among the top runners in the region.

According to Biggers, “This race provides a great preview of the state meet as that is the course for the state meet. For now, we’ll focus on Wednesday’s Bandera Pre-District Invitational.

“Our runners keep training hard to increase our mileage. The times in our meets reflect their improvement. We hope to continue this improvement in Bandera on October 9 at the District Championships.”

“Rain has made many practices wet and slippery, but our runners keep going through it all. We really feel good going into the last few weeks of the season. The boys have redoubled their efforts and many varsity runners have started training together in early morning or evening workouts to get in more miles. I’m very proud of them.”
