Texan softball gets first district victory

Senior Caroline Cagle led the Wimberley Texan softball team (11-7-2, 1-0) to a 2-1 victory over Llano to secure the first district victory of the season.

In the circle, Cagle allowed two hits throughout the seven-inning ball game and only one unearned run. She also had both RBI for the Texans.

Wimberley jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first half of the first inning on Friday.

“We really hit the ball well that inning, moved the runners over and capitalized,” Coach Robert Klick said.

ReAnn Maino scored from second base on a single up the middle by Cagle. In the third inning the Texans added another run when Marika Spector tagged up and scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by Cagle.

“Then our bats went cold for the rest of the game,” Klick said. “Those were the only two innings we had runners on. The Llano pitcher (Lauren Young) did a great job keeping us off balance.”

Llano would score a run off an error in the seventh inning of the game to bring it within one before Cagle closed the door by getting the last two batters out. She had 14 strikeouts in the game facing only 25 batters.

The Texans kicked off the district season with a win, but what is up ahead is still a bit of a mystery.

“With me being new here and us being in a new district completely due to realignment, we don’t know as much about our district opponents as normal,” Klick said. “It will be some tough games for sure.”

Beyond Llano, the district includes Bandera, Boerne, Fredericksburg and Canyon Lake.

Wimberley played in Canyon Lake on Tuesday night after the Wimberley View’s time of press. On Friday, Fredericksburg will come to town to face the Texans at 6 p.m.
