Texan soccer starts new season strong

The Wimberley Texan boys’ soccer team has started off the season with a bang winning the first game of the year 3-0 over Seguin.

That shutout is part of a strong start including two scrimmages, which Wimberley won 2-0 over Lampasas and 4-1 over Burnet.

With only one player graduating from last year’s club, the team returns essentially every starter from a team that made the playoffs last year.

“We have a lot of varsity experience coming back,” Soccer Coach Ramez Antoun said. “We’ve got a good mix of young and old. We have four sophomores that start, four seniors and three juniors so it’s a nice mix of age and experience. They all have varsity experience. We’ve got a very cohesive group, and a very unselfish group. It speaks volumes through our three games. We’ve scored nine goals, and they have been scored by nine different people. So it is very equal. It is early, but it is a great start.”

The Texans started the game versus Seguin off hot with a score about halfway through the first half.

“Seguin is very good at moving the ball through the middle of the field,” Antoun said. “Defensively, our guys are very patient, and they didn’t get trapped. They made good decisions on when to confront them and when to concede space… When we were able to dispossess them, we were able to get them on a counter attack going the other way, and that is what happened.”

Dial Hernandez was able to find open space on a counter attack and scored a goal off a long assist from his brother Axel to take the early lead.

The Texans would hold on to the shutout while Axel and Bryce Phillips each scored in the second half.

Next up, Wimberley will play Lampasas on Tuesday night after the Wimberley View’s time of press. The team will then head to a tournament in Pleasanton for games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
