Texan Roundup

Tennis

The Wimberley Texans tennis team played Boerne on Tuesday in Fredericksburg in the regional quarterfinal match. After doubles, the Texans were down 2-5 but four of those matches went to third set tie-breakers. After the doubles matches, Wimberley came out on fire and quickly picked up five singles match wins really fast. The score stood tied at 7-7 with all matches on the court. Sadly, the final score ended up with Boerne winning 11-8.

“The kids fought hard to pull it out,” Wimberley Coach Lauren Huse said. “Since we had already lost to them during the regular season, it would have been really easy for the kids to go on the courts feeling already defeated. But, they did quite the opposite! They were more determined than I had ever seen them. I was very proud of their effort. Now we just need to learn how to finish when we’re ahead!”

Cross Country

Wimberley cross country runner Griffin Neal competed at the UIL Region IV meet and finished third in over 175 runners. His time in the five kilometer race of 15:03, was good enough for the Wimberley High School junior to qualify for the state meet to be held on November 3 at the Old Settlers’ Park in Round Rock.

“Griffin ran pretty much his best race of this season,” Cross country coach Brad Biggers related. “He stayed in the top few runners for the entire race. His finish was great too as he held off several challengers for the last 100 meters to secure his spot at he state meet.”

Unfortunately for the Lady Texans, the results were less than they had hoped. After a virus went through Wimberley High School, several runners were sent home for days.

“That was a heartbreaker for us,” Biggers commented. “Our girls were consistently one of the top teams in the region all season. But, with some of them not at their best, we couldn’t quite finish the job. Still, I’m incredibly proud of how they competed all year. We return many of these runners next year, so I bet we’ll get a better finish next time.”
