Texan football starts off 2-0

The Wimberley “Code Red” defense was the difference-maker in the Texans 33-14 win over the Cuero Gobblers.

Along with two forced turnovers, forcing a turnover on downs, and an epic goalline stand that stopped Cuero from scoring before halftime, the Texan defense helped push Wimberley’s record to 2-0 overall while the Gobblers drop to 0-2.

For Head Football Coach Doug Warren, this was the most physical his defense had play in the early stages of the season.

“They played lights out tonight,” Warren said. “They were very physical, probably the most physical we’ve been in a long time on the football field, flying around getting a lot of bodies to the football, so just really pleased with them.”

The Texans struck the first blow of the game as senior quarterback Matthew Tippie found senior wide receiver, Christian Marshall, on an 83 yard touchdown pass to take an early lead at 7-0.

After the score, both defenses held the other in check for nearly two-quarters of play. With neither team giving, it was only a matter of time before one of the offenses added points to the board.

Following a Wimberley punt, the Gobblers finally broke through the Texan defense after a big pass put them in Wimberley territory. The Gobblers then scored on a 10 yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at 7-7 with just 51 seconds left in the first half.

Disaster struck for the Texans following the kickoff. A fumble by the Wimberley offense gave the ball back to Cuero.

After getting into goalline territory, the Cuero offense threatened to take the lead before halftime but the Texan defense stuffed the Gobbler offensive just short of the goalline before the buzzer rang.

“The goalline stop before halftime was awesome,” Warren said. “It was a huge momentum boost for us and just a downer for those guys on the other side because they had an opportunity to push the lead up there.”

After a fumble and recovery by the Cuero offense set the Gobblers on the Wimberley 33, Gobbler running back Tycen Williams scored from 10 yards for Cuero’s first lead of the game at 14- 7.

The Texans responded to the Gobbler touchdown in quick fashion as Tippie found Marshall again on a 44-yard touchdown pass. But a blocked extra-point kick kept Cuero lead at 14- 13.

After the two touchdowns, both of the defenses dug their heels in the dirt as they bundled up both offenses from scoring.

The Texans broke through the Gobbler defense near the end of the third quarter and drove down to the Cuero three yard line.

Junior running back Juan Olmedo scored from three yards out and scored the two point conversion as Wimberley retook the lead at 21-14.

The Texan defense came up with what was arguably their second-biggest play of the game as Wimberley forced a Cuero fumble, which was then picked up by the Texans.

The Texans turned the fumble into six points as Tippie found senior wide receiver Jaxon Watts on the 25-yard touchdown pass to break the spirit of the Gobblers and extend the lead at 27-14 following the missed 2pt conversion.

In the following drive, Cuero tried desperately to score in order to stay in the game. Facing fourth and sixth, the Gobbler pass went incomplete and gave the ball back to Wimberley.

The Texans capitalized on the turnover on downs as Olmedo ran for a 25 yard touchdown run to seal the game at 33-14 following the missed extra point.

It was a successful night for the Texan defense which saw Wimberley force two turnovers, two fourth down stops and three sacks by Cole Shroeder, Walt Gold, and Ethan Lancaster.

The Wimberley offense had a successful night as well with 311 total yards of offense including Tippie’s 256 yards of passing with three touchdown passes.

Olmedo led the team in rushing with 11 carries for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

Marshall had another big game with three catches for 127 yards and two scores followed by Jaxon Watts with eight catches for 99 yards.

It will be another tough test this Friday for Wimberley as the Texans travel up the road to Lampasas.

The game will be a top ten matchup as the #3 ranked Badgers in 4A Division 1, led by quarterback Ace Whitehead, will battle #4 ranked Texans in 4A Division 2. One person familiar with the Badgers will be Tippie who squared off with the Badgers last season when he was a Burnet Bulldog in a 45-13 loss.
