Texan Basketball takes first in Marion Tournament

On Tuesday, the Wimberley Texans (3-1) took on the San Antonio Southside Cardinals (0-4) at home in Wimberley. The Cardinals took the win in a tight match to end the Texans three-game winning streak.

The first quarter was back and forth as neither team was able to pull away. There were six lead changes in the first quarter alone, and after the first eight minutes both teams were tied up at 18 apiece.

In the second quarter the Cardinals found some separation as they held the Texans to eight points and out scored them by five to take a small lead 31-26.

The Texans kept it close in the early part of the third quarter with a score of 32-35 but let the Cardinals go on an 11-4 run to end the third quarter with a score of 36-46.

In the fourth quarter, Wimberley went on a run of their own, clawing back to a 47-51 deficit and forcing the Cardinals to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Texans couldn’t continue to fight all the way back with a final score of 50-55.

Senior guard Ethan Sharpe led the team with 14 points on 5-14 shooting with Paul Gumbert added another 12 points. Holden Crawford and Gavin Olmer cleaned it up on the glass with eight rebounds each.

On Friday and Saturday the Texans varsity team traveled to Marion High School to compete in a varsity only tournament over the weekend. They competed in three games winning all three by double digits beating the Devine Warhorses 81-59, the NBCA Wildcats 71-54 and finally the tournament host the Marion Bulldogs 71-43 to win the tournament.

In the first game, the Texans came out strong after their last loss going up by 13 at halftime and continued to win every quarter winning by 22 points with a final score of 81-59.

In the second game of the tournament, the Texans stayed right on track as they never trailed in the game after early on in the first quarter outscoring the opponent in every quarter but the second to take the game 71-54.

In the third and final game of the tournament, the Texans found themselves up against the hosts of the tournament the Marion Bulldogs. It was a close first quarter as the Texans found themselves only up by three, but in the second is when Wimberley pulled away. They outscored the Bulldogs by 12 points in the second quarter alone and continued to dominate as they outscored the Bulldogs in the third and fourth quarter. Wimberley upset the home team to win the championship game 71-43 and take first place back to Wimberley.

Senior guard Paul Gumbert led the Texans with 77 points across the three game span.
