Tennis wins big over No. 6 Boerne

A lot was a stake for the Wimberley Texan tennis team when Boerne came to town.

The sixth ranked team in the state came to Wimberley with hopes of taking the second spot in district to set up an important position in the playoff bracket. Wimberley, the seventh ranked team in the state, was seeking the same goal.

“We both lost some key seniors last year, so I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Head Tennis Coach Lauren Huse said.

The doubles teams held up their end of the bargain. Bella Weeks and Cassidy Kirchner lost the first set 2-6 but came back to win the second set 6-3 and the tie breaker set 10-6.

“It took a lot of determination to come back and win after that first set,” Huse said.

The Texans were up 5-2 after seven doubles matches. Kyle Armstrong won his first set 6-2 before losing the second set 0-6. In an intense tiebreaker, Armstrong won 11-9. It was then up to freshman John Moore to try and seal the deal for the 10th and final team point to win the match.

“He didn’t look like a freshman out there,” Huse said. “He played really well.”

A 6-1 and 6-0 finish from Moore took home the victory.

“The kids were excited about it,” Huse said. “Our team has put in a lot of work over the last couple of months. They have really made some strides. Our boys have been good since day one, but our girls have made some big strides and started winning matches that have helped us beat some good teams. They are starting to get some grit in them.”

The Texans are scheduled to start Bi-District against Burnet, but Burnet was unable to complete a full team and is forced to forfeit the match. Wimberley will be back on the court on either October 17 or 19 for Area play.
