Softball is in prime position
The Wimberley Texans softball team was able to round out the first round of district play this week including taking an important 14-3 win over the Davenport Wolves on Tuesday.
With their win over Davenport, the Texans sit firmly in fourth place, which would offer a seat in the playoffs, with a chance to force a tiebreak against Canyon Lake this Tuesday at home for third place.
The Wolves took the first lead of the game in the first inning as a Texans error allowed one run to cross for Davenport to take a 1-0 lead.
But the lead didn’t last long as Davenport walked the batter with the bases loaded to tie the game up for the Texans with two outs.
Wimberley then extended the lead as Reese Adams hit a hard ground ball to center field to score two more runs as Wimberley took a 3-1 lead.
After holding Davenport scoreless in the second inning, Wimberley tacked on another run as Juniper Daniel’s fly ball to center field was dropped, which allowed MacKenzie Moore to score from home as the Texans extended the lead at 4-1.
Davenport wasn’t out just yet as in the third inning an error by the Texans defense allowed two runs to score for the Wolves to make it 4-3 Wimberley.
With Wimberley having runners on third and second with no outs, Jesse Weeks singled on a line drive towards right field to extend the lead for the Texans at 5-3.
Adams then scored on a passed ball to add on to the lead before Davenport got two outs in the inning as Wimberley led 6-3.
Despite facing two outs, Ashlynn Castro doubled towards left field to score Weeks and extend the lead at 7-3.
Daniel then tripled to right field to score Rhagen Masur, who replaced Castro as the courtesy runner, before Daniel scored on a passed ball to make it 9-3.
Addison Kirbo ended the scoring barrage in an emphatic way as a solo home-run towards left field added another run for the Texans as Wimberley took a 10-3 lead.
Wimberley held Davenport off the bases in the top of the fourth inning before scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning as Weeks hit an RBI single to score Adams to extend the lead at 11-3.
Another scoreless inning by the Wolves meant the Texans needed just two more runs to score in the fifth inning in order to force the runrule.
With runners on first and second with one out, Cat Pendleton hit an RBI single towards center field to score Daniel as Wimberley inched closer to the run-rule at 12-3.
Adams ended the game for the Wolves as she hit an RBI double to score both runners and seal the game for the Texans with a 14-3 win.
Adams led the team in offense going 3-4 with three hits and four RBIs followed by Weeks who went 2-3 with RBIs and Kirbo who also went 2-3 with a solo homerun.
Castro pitched through five innings allowing just three hits, three runs, and throwing five strikeouts.
However Friday game’s didn’t match the same levels of success from Tuesday’s game as the Texans traveled to Boerne to battle the Greyhounds.
Despite the Texans trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning, the Greyhounds proceeded to score 13 unanswered runs on route to a 16-1 loss for Wimberley.
The Texans return to play Tuesday night as they host Canyon Lake at 7 p.m before traveling to Bandera to battle the Bulldogs in a Friday night showdown also at 7 p.m.
