Softball falls in stunning 34-25 extra-inning loss

No, the headline score was not from a recent basketball game nor a football game.

In fact, it was the outcome for an absolute slugfest as the Wimberley Texans battled the Marion Bulldogs.

With the two teams combining for a grand total of 61 runs, it was the Marion Bulldogs who took home the win as the Texans fell 36-25 in extra innings in a whopper of a game.

As Marion took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, the Texans tied the game up as Juniper Daniel hit an RBI double to score Mackenzie Moore to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Bulldogs then responded by scoring four runs in the top of the second inning, to take a 5-1 lead.

The lead didn’t last long as the Texans tied up the game on back-to-back-to-back RBI triples and set the game up at 5-5.

Katie Schroeder broke the tiebreak with an RBI single to make it 6-5 before an error by the Marion center fielder added two more runs for the Texans as Wimberley took a 8-5 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Marion cut the lead down to 8-6 with a fielder’s choice.

Following an error by Wimberley, which made it 8-7, the Texans walked in the next run as the Bulldogs tied the game up at 8-8.

Another walk-in run by Wimberley allowed Marion to take the lead at 9-8 before a bases clearing RBI triple added to Marion’s lead at 12-8.

The Bulldogs tacked on one more run as Marion held a 13-8 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Moore put the Texans back on the board as a two out RBI single cut the lead down to 13-9.

Daniel then hit her third triple of the game to score two more runs as Wimberley cut the lead down again at 13-11.

Marion added to their lead with an RBI double and a Wimberley error to make it 15-11 before the Texans walked in another run to end the inning with the Bulldogs now leading 16-11.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, Marion produced three errors which allowed Wimberley to score three runs to make it 16-14.

Daniel then cleared the bases with an RBI double as Wimberley tied the game up at 16-16.

Peyton Smith then stole home as Wimberley retook the lead at 17-16 before Daniel stole home to extend the lead at 18-16.

Marion then tied the game after scoring on a passed ball and a walk-in run in the top of the 7th inning to make it 18-18.

A Texan’s wild pitch allowed two more runs to score as Marion retook the lead at 20-18.

Another Wimberley error and a fielder’s choice saw the Bulldogs take a 21-18 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th.

Following a leadoff triple by Schroeder, an error by the Marion pitcher allowed Schroeder to score as the lead was cut to 21-19.

Another Bulldog error allowed another Texan run to come across before Daniel hit yet another triple to score the tying run.

A pop-out in foul territory ended the inning, as Marion and Wimberley headed into extra innings tied up at 21-21.

Marion proceeded to score 15 runs in the top of the 8th inning as the Bulldogs took a 36-21 lead.

The Texans made another valiant comeback by scoring four runs in the 8th inning but it wasn’t enough as Marion handed Wimberley the loss at 36-25.

Leading the Texans in offense was Daniel who went 5-6 at the plate with three triples, two doubles, a walk and eight RBIs.

Wimberley returns to play this Friday as the Texans kick off district with their annual rivalry game with Canyon Lake in the Battle of the Backbone.
