Softball Bi-District Champs

“Our girls didn’t freak out,” Wimberley Texan softball Head Coach Richard Klick said. “I was proud of them, because it would have been easy to let the moment get to big for them, and they didn’t allow it.”

The pressure was on. The Texans had secured the third seed in district with a 9-0 win over Bandera in last week’s tie-breaker. Now, they faced Taylor in the Bi-District Championship.

“We were facing another tough pitcher and (Wimberley Pitcher) Caroline Cagle went head to head with her,” Klick said. “It was all about who was going to bend and not break.”

Both pitchers held up their end of the bargain. The game was tied in the bottom of the seventh, and normally final, inning at 0-0. Taylor had a runner on first and third base with one out.

“It was a tough situation for us, because we couldn’t allow a base hit or the game would have been over,” Klick said.

A fly ball hit to centerfield normally would have been enough to allow the runner on third to tag up and run home for the winning score, but not this time. Texan Centerfielder Cypress Daniel made the grab and got the ball in from the outfield fast enough to hold the runner of third base. It was a game saving defensive play. Cagle would go on to finish off the side and send the ball game into extra inning.

The Texans managed to muster three hits throughout the game. Jenna Ford led the top of the ninth off with a walk. Rhyan Masur put the ball in play and reached first base. A passed ball allowed both runners to advanced even though the batter struck out. With one out and runners in scoring position, Wimberley took advantage of a second passed ball. Ford would score to go up 1-0.

“We knew it was pretty much over once we got that run,” Klick said.

Cagle, who had 13 strikeouts, finished the complete game shutout in the bottom of the ninth to win the Bi-District Championship.

The next game is Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. against Bellville at Wiemer High School. The series will be a one-game playoff.
