Soccer teams off to strong starts

Both the boys’ and the girls’ soccer teams have had an impressive start to the season.

After a 3-3 start, the girls’ soccer team has won 11 games in a row. The boys’ team got back on track with two wins last week to bring their record to 8-2-1 on the season.

Last weekend offered a unique opportunity for the Texans. Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams played a back-to-back double header. Typically one will be on the road while the other plays at home.

“It was great to have the boys out there supporting the girls, and then our girls stayed around and cheered on the boys,” Girls’ Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “It’s unusual because they play somewhere else. It brought the program together and galvanized both sets of players. It was great to support our other soccer players, because we don’t get to do that during most of the year.”

Both games were against Great Hearts Northern Oaks. The boys’ went on to a 5-0 victory. This was the second time this season the boys have beaten Great Hearts by a 5-0 margin.

The girls’ team won 6-1 after letting a single goal slip in as time expired. Jasmine Cante, Izzy Frank, Laysa Molina, Sydney Hendon, Natalie Figueroa and Lexi Howell were the goal scorers.

“We started out the game pretty sluggishly for our standards,” Nute said. “For the first 10 minutes, we were sluggish, but we found our way in the game and dominated possession and fully deserved the victory. It was nice to see that there were six goals and six different scorers… We had a lot of girls step up. Three defenders scored in the game.”

In a game that was nearly a shutout, the defense played well too.

“Elise Brown is a left back for the team, and she was on JV last year,” Nute said. “Soccer wasn’t her thing. She is a pole vaulter, but the improvement she has made in the last month is astounding. She is a junior that has really cemented her place on the team.”

The last two weeks have only had one game each. Wimberley beat San Antonio Cole 1-0 the previous week for the second time this season. Senior Holly Harwood scored the lone goal of the game.

The boys’ played on Tuesday at Canyon Lake and will play on Friday at 7 p.m. at Bandera. The girls’ played on Tuesday at home against Canyon Lake and on Friday will play at home against Bandera at 7 p.m.
