Soccer places multiple athletes on All-District

With the end of the school year nearing, sports programs at Wimberley High School begin to wrap up as coaches announce the all-conference and regional honors won by their athletes. Both boys and girls Texan soccer teams won multiple honors during the 2018-2019 season.

The Texan girls’ team, coached by Brinton Nute, gathered three of the highest honors with junior Casey Crawford sharing co-goalkeeper of the year award, Sonny Jones receiving a like honor as co-midfielder of the year while Texan sophomore Holly Harwood won forward of the year honors.

The Texans girls won the district championship this Spring then advanced to the regional championship where they took second place, one win short of a trip to the state tournament. During this past season, Wimberley’s girls racked up a fantastic 25-4-2 record. The Texans graduate only three starters off this powerful team.

Anna Olmedo, August McDermid and Avery Biggers were selected by the coaches to the all-conference first team. Second team awards went to Jerzi Deatherage, Ryland Maples and Gabi Perez while Jada Bustamante, Rachel Kimbell-Jack and Arianna Hernandez received honorable mention awards.

For the Texan boys’ team, coached by Ramez Antoun, All-District first team honorees included Alan Hernandez and Jack Cole while Grant Cole and Brian Maguire were named to the second team.

District defender of the year honors went to Mason O’Connor while the coaches selected Brenden Shott as best goalkeeper of the year. Edgar Jimenez, Nick Kohls and Brian Schmidt also received honorable mention laurels.

Although the Texan boys’ team loses 13 of this year’s 18 varsity players to graduation, Coach Antoun points to the JV’s 9-3-3 record this season as a strong source for next year’s team. “We’re hoping some of these new players will step up and fill those open positions,” he says.
