Soccer passes big test in pre-district

The Wimberley Lady Texan soccer team had another successful week going 2-0 including a victory over a difficult opponent with plenty of history from last season.

On Tuesday, Wimberley beat Burnet 3-0. Jerzi Deatherage scored two long-range goals from outside of the box and Holly Harwood scored on a corner kick.

“We had 44 shots in the game overall, which is almost unheard of,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “We dominated offensively, and played most of the game inside their final third (of the field.) Their keeper made some good saves, and we had a few miscues on our part as well, but it was a good win.”

On Friday, Wimberley played Pleasanton. Last season, Wimberley beat Pleasanton four times but three of the games required penalty kicks at the end to break a tie.

“They typically make the Regional Finals, so they are a good team,” Nute said.

The game was a bit different for Wimberley, which is used to playing at home on a turf field.

“Their home field is a very narrow, grass and bumpy field which doesn’t typically suit our game,” Nute said. “We started the game slowly.”

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime before Pleasanton scored the first goal about 10 minutes into the second half.

“That kicked us into gear, and we seemed to wake up a bit,” Nute said.

Wimberley quickly responded with a goal from Sunny Jones from outside the box with her left foot. Harwood then got on a breakaway before beating the keeper with a shot to the corner. Within 10 minutes, Wimberley led 2-1.

“We kind of survived the last 10 to 15 minutes of pressure,” Nute said. “Our defense held strong commanded by Jada Bustemante and some good saves from Casey Crawford to keep them at bay.”

Liberty Hill came t0 Wimberley on Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press. Liberty Hill has won their last two games 19-0 and 16-0, and they are coming off back-to-back appearances in the State Finals.

On Friday, Wimberley heads to Salado.
