Soccer closing in on second

The Wimberley Lady Texan soccer team had a tough loss to Boerne early in the week before bouncing back with a big rivalry victory over Canyon Lake.

On Tuesday night, Boerne, the presumptive district champions, beat Wimberley 7-0.

“We knew they were a top team in the Region and that this would be a very difficult game,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “They got off to a hot start with a few early goals. The girls battled hard, and we got a chance to play some freshmen. There were some good performances besides the result. It wasn’t all doom and gloom.”

Against Canyon Lake, Wimberley jumped out to an early lead thanks to the dominating play of freshman Emily Thames. Thames scored the first three goals of the game.

“At that point, I had to take her off the field,” Nute said. “Emily is a multisport star. She played varsity basketball. She played volleyball in the fall. She is running track and winning races, and she is a varsity soccer player. She is the fastest in the athletic program, but she has great technical abilities as well. She really burst on to the scene this week.”

Izzy Frank and Sunny Jones also scored goals on the way to a 5-0 victory for Wimberley.

“I was really proud of the team,” Nute said. “Despite the result on Tuesday, the girls came out and never gave up and they put themselves in a position to take second in district with a win over Bandera.”

Wimberley is off this week until the March 20 home game versus Bandera, which starts at 6 p.m.
