Second half dooms Texan football

In a game of two very different halves last Friday, the Wimberley Texans football team won the first half. Then Canyon Lake stormed back in the second half to win the game at 34-14. In mid-fourth quarter, with the Hawks leading only 20-14, the Texans were still in the game.

Then Wimberley fumbled a kickoff on their own 35 yard line and Canyon Lake recovered. From there, it was all downhill for the home team.

The visitors scored once in the third quarter, then with time clicking down in the fourth quarter, Jacob Ruff scampered 39 yards for the killing score to crush Wimberley’s hopes. On their next possession, Canyon Lake ran out the clock, leaving Wimberley

little chance for a Wimberley comeback.

“We executed well early in the game, both on offense and defense,” Wimberley coach Doug Warren said. “Then we got tired and let the game get away from us. But we also had some bright spots in this game. For example, we were more physical than we’ve been in the past games and that’s a good sign. Still, it’s never fun to lose.”

This week the Texans host Fredericksburg in this season’s second home game. Rather than the usual Friday game night and time, the Texans will play Thursday night at 7:00PM with Channel 51 KBVO Austin broadcasting the play-by-play.

Anticipating another tough match, Coach Warren talked about the upcoming Fredericksburg game. “They’ve got a really good quarterback named Hobbs Price who is also a good runner and a strong team leader. He can play quarterback or running back, switching positions with Brant Bowers, last year’s signal caller.” So far this year in only three games, Bowers has passed fo 744 yards for an average of 14.6 per toss. Meanwhile, while playing halfback, Price averages 7.6 yard per carry.

“Fredericksburg will be a strong matchup for us,” Coach Warner predicted. “Luckily, we came out of the Canyon Lake game with no injuries other than the normal bumps and bruises. For Thursday’s game, we don’t plan to any changes in the way we play. We just need to continue getting.”

With victories over Cedar Creek and Sam Houston and a loss to Kerrville Tivy, Fredericksburg’s record stands at 2-1. Wimberley drops to 1-2 with a win over Burnet and losses to Giddings and Canyon Lake.
