With two Salado players trying to block the shot, Cole Schroeder goes up for a shot. The Texans lost 65-55 and were knocked out of district 24A competition.

Season ends with Bi-District loss

Wimberley’s High School’s basketball boys’ team closed their season on Tuesday, February 29 with a 55-66 loss to Salado at Concordia University in Austin to a very powerful and experienced Salado team. With the loss, the Texans were eliminated from the playoffs and ended their 2018-2019 basketball season. The Salado Eagles starting five featured mostly senior players who had been together for three seasons. With the loss, the Texans record ended at 17-18. Salado’ record for the year rose to a fantastic 24-7.

“They definitely out-sized us,” Texan Coach Mike Whitten acknowledged. The Eagles didn’t have any 6’9” or 6”8 players, but across the board, even their guards were taller and bulkier than most Wimberley players except center Landon Kirchner. Still, I thought it we competed with them well considering they were a team made up mostly of seniors and juniors,” Texan coach Mike Whitten said after the game. “I’ll admit that playing at this level against a bigger and more experienced team was a shock for some of our younger players. We just couldn’t make the shots when we had openings. Quite simply, they made their shots and we didn’t. They played consistently and we didn’t.”

“But when we got going, we played well. Salado simply played more consistently. After the game, I told our returning players, “We need to think about this game and think about our future then start getting ready for next season.”

“Along that line, since our basketball season is over, we try to get our guys to play other sports. So, many already have started moving to Spring sports such as baseball or track and field.”

“Looking back, I’d say we had a great year. Beginning the year, we had just three starters back. But, by building on them, and bringing the sophomores along faster, we enjoyed a solid year. We won our way out of our district to bi-district play and we won with a different players stepping up at different times. The young starters got more varsity experience which we lacked this year and we did it while building around those few experienced players

“With the returning players, I think we’ll have a great season next Winter. This group of players was maybe the closest team I’ve ever coached. A coach can build on that team spirit and cooperation.

“Fighting to get out of a tough district then winning those last two games in district competition was really inspiring. Then, Bi-District competition was a good and a tough experience. Regardless of the result of this last game, this team went a lot deeper into the tournaments than many people expected. I’m really proud of what these kids accomplished this year!”
