Lady Texans take on Bulldogs; Beat Panthers

On Tuesday The Lady Texans had an off day but they scheduled a non-district home game against the Burnett Lady Bulldogs (26-8) who are currently first in their district. Things got chilly down the stretch as it was neck and neck the whole way that saw Wimberley fall short at the last second, losing 46-51.

“Tonight was a bye but our kids get better when they play and they want to play,” Head Coach Caleb Hall said.

Neither team pulled away during the game and that was no different in the first as the Bulldogs took a one point lead going into the second.

In the second quarter the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to start the quarter but was quickly stopped by back-toback Texan baskets as they closed the gap fast and took the lead forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Texans and Bulldogs traded the lead five times as both teams’ high level offenses were shown until Wimberley broke out into a little lead going up 31-25 right before halftime.

The third quarter saw the Bulldogs jump out on another early 8-0 run as they took the lead back at 31-33 and forced the Texans to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, both teams again traded the lead seven times before the quarter ended with Wimberley on top 4039 in this back and forth game.

In the fourth quarter, the Texans offense was slowed down as they tried to hold off the Bulldogs in the last few minutes of the game. Unfortunately the six fourth-quarter points wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs went up late in the 4th and never looked back as they won the game 46-51.

“We went back and forth with a top team in the state all night and I think that just shows the growth we’ve had this season,” Hall said.

On Friday the Lady Texans had a huge win at home over the Navarro Panthers winning 48-32 as the Lady Texans ran away with the game early on and didn’t look back. As in one of the biggest games of the season, they took a commanding lead and dominated the game to keep their third place finish in district hopes alive.

“We knew coming in that to keep our 3rd place hopes alive we had to win and that’s exactly what we did, we got it done” Hall said.

The Lady Texans (21--15) next game will be Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as they travel to Canyon Lake (12-19) to play their last game of the season. The Lady Texans have locked up the 4th spot in the district with a chance to tie for third with a win on Tuesday and a Navarro Panthers loss which would result in a third game between the two teams to decide who captures third and fourth place.
