Lady Texans split tournament with two wins

Last week, the Wimberley girls’ basketball team played a single game against Gonzales and lost 62-47. Then, in the Navaro tournament on Thursday, the Texans lost to Floresville 44-30 but came back to beat a very strong San Antonio Cole 46-40. On Friday, Wimberley defeated Austin Lanier 67-30. That afternoon, Wimberley lost to Somerset 62-43. Lockhart beat the Lady Texans 27-24 on Saturday.

Texan Coach Ted Dydalewicz commented on the weekend, “We always hope that we’re getting better. In our wins, we played very well because the scoring was exactly what we needed. We played a very good game against Lockhart and allowed only 27 points.’

“We’re competitive in every game but sometimes, when an opponent makes a run in the fourth quarter, we fade. Then we have to work hard just to get back into the game.”

Asked what looks good right now, Coach Dydalewizc said,“One thing I really like is the chemistry of this team. The girls work hard and never seem to give up. Our record is now 5-7. We’ve struggled in the last two years, but already this year we’re ahead of that point.”

“I’ll tell you who’s looking good on this team right now. That’s Maddie Martin, our leading scorer who’s been consistent. Another girl who has really improved is post player McKenna Ward, a sophomore, who has learned a lot since last year. We’re beginning to see all the hard work she’s put in on her offensive skills.”

“I would add Aubrey Schoenert, our other post player, a junior, who is experiencing a good year. As a good shot blocker and rebounder, she’s starting to except the role she needs to play.”

“The last girl is Jessica Matlock, a senior guard. She struggled some at the beginning of the year, but she’s become one of our top scorers. In just this last week and a half, she’s really come alive. We’re starting to see the scoring we had hoped to see.”

“By time we get to district play, the girls know that we’re looking at a number of combinations. So, everything we do right now is building toward those rotations and correcting the our mistakes. We want to make sure that by January, we’re prepared. The girls have known for some time that January 4 is our goal because that’s the date of the first district games.”

This Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Wimberley’s varsity team will play in the Tuloso Midway tournament in Corpus Christi. However, the freshmen and the junior varsity teams will play away against Comfort on Thursday, December 8. Then, the following Tuesday, December 11, the Texan girls travel to Geneva Boerne with the JV playing at 4:00 and the varsity playing at 6:30.
