Lady Texans rebound to stay in the district race

The Wimberley Lady Texans Basketball team finished up another week of district play by splitting a pair of district games with a 70-40 loss to Fredericksburg Lady Billies and a 79-32 win over Davenport Lady Wolves

On Tuesday night, the Lady Texans squared off with the Lady Billies with a shot at the district lead on the line.

The first quarter turned out to be disastrous for Wimberley, who scored only two points during the period. While the Lady Texan defense did give the Lady Billies trouble on offense, the combination of second-chance points and turnovers gave Fredericksburg a 17-2 lead heading into the second quarter.

Though the Wimberley defense held the Lady Billies to just 13 points in the second half, the Lady Texans scored only nine points with seven coming off of free throws as Wimberley trailed their Hill Country rivals 30-11 at halftime.

After a sluggish offensive performance, the Lady Texans exploded in the third quarter scoring 18 points during the period. But the Lady Billies’ 19 third-quarter points kept Wimberley at bay as the two teams headed into the final period.

Fredericksburg closed out the game scoring 21 points compared to Wimberley’s 11 to hand the Lady Texans their first loss in district with a 70-40 defeat

Junior Mackenzie Haston led the team in scoring with 10 points followed by Emily Thames and Brooke Burcham who both scored seven points each while Alex Rushing locked down the boards with 13 rebounds.

But the lessons learned from the loss to Fredericksburg were put into full effect Friday night as the Lady Texans traveled to Davenport to take on the Lady Wolves.

In a complete 180 turnaround, the Lady Texan offense took off in the first quarter by scoring 15 points during the period while holding the Lady Wolves to just seven.

The offensive attack continued for Wimberley heading into the second quarter as the Lady Texans tacked on another 18 points to add on to the lead. Heading into halftime, Wimberley led Davenport 33-19.

Wimberley put on another 19 points on the Lady Wolves while allowing just seven points in the third quarter.

Wimberley finished off the game scoring 27 points in the final period to take home the 79-32 victory.

Scoring the most points since their win over Austin Navarro, the leading scorer of the Lady Texans for the night was Burcham with 22 points followed closely by Madelynne Rivera with 21.

Burcham also finished the night off with 10 rebounds which gave the junior a double-double for the night.

With the one loss and the one win, Wimberley evens out their record at 10-10 overall and are currently tied for second place in the district behind the Boerne Lady Hounds.

Wimberley returns home Tuesday night to battle the aforementioned Lady Hounds before starting the second half of district play by traveling on the road against rival Canyon Lake.
