Lady Texans hold on for thrilling win

The Wimberley Lady Texans held off a furious Llano rally in the fourth quarter as the Lady Texans kicked off district play with an exciting 51-49 victory.

Despite trailing 41-28 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lady Jackets scored 21 points during the period to cut the lead down to one. At one point they took the lead, but the Lady Texans were able to hold out with their tough defensive play during the final minute to secure the win.

“There was a lot of momentum changes in the game,” Head Basketball Coach Caleb Hall said. “I felt like we really dug in on defense when we needed to… when the momentum shifts it’s a real fine line between letting that momentum get away from you and digging in on defense and stopping it.”

“I was really impressed at the end of the game,” Hall continued to say. “The girls were down a point, down a couple and dug in hitting big free throws and a big steal with a bucket at the end.”

After a slow start, both teams’ offenses perked up towards the end of the first quarter with Wimberley coming out with the lead at 16-8.

But the Lady Jackets put up a decent rally in the second quarter, outscoring the Texans 14-7 during the period, and were able to cut the Texan lead down to one at 23-22 after a three pointer with 30 seconds left.

Wimberley accumulated their biggest lead of the night during the third quarter as the Lady Texans jumped all the Lady Jackets defense. Outscoring Llano 18-6, Wimberley took their largest lead of the night and put all the pressure on Llano up 41-28.

Llano then put up a furious rally scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter and slowed down the Lady Texan offense. The Lady Jackets ended up taking their first lead of the game since the first quarter up 49-48 with 1:30 in the fourth quarter.

But on Llano inbounds play, the Lady Texans stole the ball and scored on the layup to go up 50-49. After Llano was forced to foul, Wimberley then hit one free throw to extend the lead to two before the defense came up with the game winning defensive stop.

“When you work that hard-good things happen,” Hall said. “I felt like that summed up the game in total, we worked extremely hard for that win, almost got away from us and pulled it right back in.”

The Lady Texans will be on the road for the next two games as Wimberley battles rivals Canyon Lake on Tuesday and Fredericksburg on Friday.
