Lady Texans in heated of playoff race

After finishing the first round of district play on Friday, the Wimberley Lady Texans find themselves in a heated battle for a playoff berth.

The Lady Texans currently sit third in the district standings behind Fredericksburg and Boerne. With all their district wins coming with a margin of five points or less, the second round of district play will be no cake walk.

“It comes down to the details,” Head Basketball Coach Caleb Hall said commenting on the second round of district play. “We’ve talked a lot about the details, and that’s going to be our focus in the second half (district play)… It’s not about the good things you do right, but it’s also about correcting the errors and trying to correct the mistakes.”

“We do a lot of things right,” Hall continued to say. “We got to get better on the smaller percentage of things that we still struggle with, and if we can clean up the details and the mistakes, that is when you start seeing good basketball.”

Some of that hard work is starting to payoff including this week’s win over Bandera.

Facing a 20-9 deficit at the start of the second quarter, Wimberley battled back, scoring 20 points in the second quarter, and cut the Bandera lead down to just seven by halftime.

Wimberley proceeded to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 30-18 in the second half including hitting a game tying buzzer beater to send the game into overtime.

Just a single overtime wouldn’t be enough for the two teams as both the Lady Texans and Lady Bulldogs scored six points each and forced a second overtime.

After their tough defensive play in the second half and overtime, the Wimberley defense shutout the Bandera offense in the second overtime period and allowed the Lady Texan offense to score five points to seal an epic 70-65 victory.

The momentum of the double overtime win seemed to carry on Friday night as Wimberley battled the Boerne Lady Greyhounds. The Lady Texans jumped all over the Lady Greyhounds in the first quarter and took an outstanding 18-10 lead including six points from both Briana Jones and Brooke Burcham.

Boerne fought back against the Wimberley attack to tie the game up in the second quarter and soon became a back and forth battle between the two teams. The Lady Greyhounds took the lead up 29- 26 at halftime after hitting a last second three pointer before the buzzer.

But Boerne offense quickly heated up during the second half while the Wimberley offense seemed to go cold.

Outscoring the Lady Texans 45-13 in the second half, the Lady Greyhounds hit a barrage of fast break points and three pointers on route to a 74-39 victory.

“It’s kind of strange when you have great game,” Hall said commenting on this week’s games. “ A big overtime win at Bandera and turnaround and play a great first half, we always talk about the power of momentum.”

“They (Boerne) came out and hit the first shot of the third quarter and it just seem to spark something,” Hall continued to say. “We probably didn’t play as physical and as aggressive as we needed too on offense, and we’ve got to learn how to protect the ball a little bit better.”
