Lady Texans finish up non-district play

The Wimberley Lady Texans basketball team wrapped up the final week of non-district play this week before heading into district play in pursuit of their second straight playoff berth.

With a three-game slate on tap, the Lady Texans hoped to finish strong.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Texans battled the Bruceville Eddy Lady Eagles in Wimberley’s first game from the holiday break.

The Lady Eagles got off to a hot start scoring 17 points in the first quarter including hitting a trio of three-pointers. However, the Texans withstood the fury of points including hit ting a couple of three-pointers from Carson Crowder and Rhyan Masur to keep the score 17-12 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw the Lady Texans fall deep into foul trouble and Bruceville Eddy shot 20 free throws during the period. The Lady Eagles hit 12 of them. The Texans on the other hand went cold by making it eight points during the period as the Lady Eagles took a 31-20 lead.

But Wimberley was not done yet. Coming out of halftime, the Lady Texans roared to a 9-2 lead to trim the lead down to 33-29. Heading into the fourth quarter, Wimberley trailed 39-35.

The fourth quarter turned south for the Lady Texans as the team’s shooting went cold only scoring one field goal with the rest of the points coming off of free throws. At the buzzer, Wimberley lost to the Lady Eagles 48-41.

Leading the team in scoring was Crowder with nine points followed by Mackenzie Haston with eight. Brooke Burcham led the team in rebounds with 12 boards followed by Masur, Haston, and Alex Rushing with six between the three.

A short day of rest, the Lady Texans were set to play the next day against the San Marcos HomeSchool Panthers.

In a close battle, the Lady Texans fell to the Panthers in a 60-57 loss. Leading the Texans in scoring was Crowder once again with 15 points followed by Rushing with 13. Haston led the team in rebounds with 10 followed by Crowder with 9.

With two losses on the week, Wimberley looked to close out the week on top with a road game against the Comfort Deer.

The Lady Texans were able to bounce back to end the week on a high note as Wimberley knocked off Comfort 71-41 for the victory.

The Lady Texans finish non-district with a 7-9 record as Wimberley approaches district play.

With the battle for the playoffs expected to be a heated one, every district game for the Wimberley Lady Texans team will be an important one.

Wimberley kicks off district at home against rival Canyon Lake in the Battle of the Backbone Tuesday night before traveling on the road to Bandera Friday night.
